This highly controversial video is the very last video leaving for tonight. Instead on focusing on sex or religion, in this video she took it to a different level by focusing on war and politics.
It opens with several (fe)male models dressed as soldiers on a fashion runway. During the second verse of the song, we can see Madonna and her group aggressively preparing to enter the fashion show. Later in the video, we can see them walking to the show, stepping into a car (a Mini Cooper as mentioned in the rap of the song), with which they drive into the show. After this, she starts spraying water at the paparazzi and the rest of the audience at the show, inter-cut with scenes of war and poverty in the Middle East.
On April 1, 2003, after only just a few showings of the video on TV channels worldwide, Madonna decided to pull the release of the video. In the heat of the attention surrounding the video, she made the following statement:

I feel lucky to be an American citizen for many reasons – one of which is the right to express myself freely, especially in my work. I understand that there have been reports about my upcoming video "American Life" in the media – much of which is inaccurate. I am not Anti-Bush. I am not pro-Iraq. I am pro Peace. I have written a song and created a video which expresses my feelings about our culture and values and the illusions of what many people believe is the American dream – the perfect life. As an artist, I hope that this provokes thought and dialogue. I don't expect everyone to agree with my point of view. I am grateful to have the freedom to express these feelings and that's how I honor my country.

Two weeks later, after the pulling of the original video, she decided to go for a basic version, only featuring Madonna lip-syncing the song with ever-changing flags in the background.

Firstly, sorry for the length of this write-up.
Secondly, what an amazing video. I guess violent Madonna really entertains me. This video just keeps my eyes locked on the screen during the whole thing. Really amazing. I'm glad this video made it so far. Actually, this one was in the top 10 most of the time, but it started to sink a little when the last votes came in. However, #13 out of 67 videos is still very high so I'm happy!

Take A Bow should have made it higher It's one of her best if you ask me.

Deeper and Deeper? ****, there goes my #1. See, I've said that this is her most heartbreaking video, and I mean that. Its concept is very interesting, it's intriguing. And everytime I see her balloons being cut away by that terrible man I get sad

What It Feels Like For a Girl would've been my #12 or #13... it's awesome.

Erotica made it a little too far but I love it too.

The only reason why I really like PDP are the dancing scenes and of course the legendary song. Don't understand why it made it so far.

GWW is indeed way to high, but every time Madge does something undoubtedly great these days it always gets a lot of love, so this was to be expected.

When I watched WIFLFAG for the first time I never really thought it had been that much of a controversial video. It was just Madonna causing a little bit of trouble. And setting it to A&B's remix takes the hypnosis of watching it to a whole new level.

Papa Don't Preach is brilliant. I love how the video is so literal, while doing a great job at telling the story.

American Life is basically the only Madonna video that has really kind of shocked me. I absolutely love the rap segment.

All my videos are Top 20. But I guess that's because my favorites are also universally loved.

And I'll finally be able to be here for tomorrow.
