It's not always true. I don't think the success of a lead single relies that much on the artist's previous era. It's so easy to illegally download music nowadays and people won't waste their money if they don't want to. Even you did give an example :

Another example is Taylor Swift. The lead single Mine wasn't as big as YBWM or Love Story, and most of Speak Now's singles underperformed, but she still hit #1 on iTunes fast with these random songs lately.
I agreed that Gaga needs to let the music speak for itself though. However, her starpower is still too strong for her to have disappointed opening sales next era.
