Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood has had an amazing career in country and she occasionally brings in religious references, like Jesus Take the Wheel. This time, for her greatest hits album, she decides to bring it back and she really brings it out in full force. The result is a stunning track that really takes me to church, and I'm not even religious.

Carrie sounds better than ever. She sounds brimming with conviction in the verses and in the chorus, better yet. The way she quietly sings "changed" and then belts out "stronger", just makes you feel like Jesus is coming down onto you and lifting you up into some eternal bliss. The way she sings is just everything. The instruments and other things are just secondary, merely playing off the strength of her vocals. The power of her voice alone is enough to make you feel powerful.

Though her voice is the strongest, the lyrics are strong too. Though the track is obviously religious, I don't think that the lyrics are too overt in proclaiming it's a Christian song. It doesn't feel like it's being pushed in your face. Instead, the lyrics just feel inspirational and motivational. Compounded with her voice, it's formidable.

There really isn't much for me to criticise, maybe the choir got me feeling a little sketchy, but the song is still great as it is. The song just feels like you're running your last lap towards the finish, and that finale in the song just makes you feel triumphant.

After almost a decade full of successful hits, Carrie Underwood releases the lead single from her greatest hits compilation called "Greatest Hits: Decade #1". The song is one of the best I ever heard this year and from Carrie, as well. She has an amazing powerful voice and she just proves why she won American Idol and the instrumental is also amazing. My only problem would be the pronunciation of the word "changed" which is not my favourite ever, but I don't care about it that much. This song was for sure the perfect way to precede a greatest hits album.

Score: 10/10

At first listen, i thought it was a Two Black Cadillacs/Blown Away little baby considering the production sounds like a complete fusion of the two powerhouse songs. but after listening to the song in full, i realized that it's nothing like those two. Something in the Water really does stand by it's name, and by that i mean it really baptizes you. it's a complete balance of what you want from Mrs. Fisher, it has a strong message, but it's not preachy, it's inspirational without being too cheesy and it's sonically and lyrically anti bro-country which is what's the cool thing in country radio nowadays.

Her vocals are so on point, it's great to see that the training from 'The Sound of Music: Live!' really helped her improve her tone, not to mention that the improvement in her music from her first LP is very noticeable as well. well done, Mrs. Fisher! a very excellent way to start another decade of your hits.

Carrie Underwood - Something In The Water

Something In The Water is the first single from Carrie Underwood's greatest hits, the interestingly titled 'Greatest Hits: Decade #1.' Such a name for a greatest hits compilation implies that Carrie is in it for the long haul and has no plans of letting up anytime soon and she hasn't. She's been on a winning streak since she started her career but recently has been on fire releasing excellent single after excellent single from her most recent album Blown Away.

"Something In The Water" continues that streak of great singles. Carrie doesn't let up throughout the song, singing with a great sense of urgency and resolve that fits the song's subject matter of having an life changing event that lead to an awakening in her. She sings of being changed and stronger, the song could be about a religious revival after a baptism, but could also serve as a metaphor for finding a reinvigorating new path in life. Everything in the song comes together, Carrie's singing, the gospel choir at the end, the bright urgent music. The only criticism is that Carrie's line from "Amazing Grace" is a little tacked on to the end and disrupts from the song; it's not sung with as much triumph as the rest of the song and not sung delicately enough to come across as meditative and thankful as it could. The only other major disappointment is that the new album will be a greatest hits, we'll have to wait longer for a full-length of new material.
