It matters if an artist wants their album to sound like more than a mere grab bag of singles from various genres. Coherence is important for a quality album.

In fact, rock bands and other artists who have already proven their skill by releasing excellent albums in the past are usually held up to higher standards by critics. It only makes sense. Perhaps this specific RS critic preferred Yours Truly, considering:

It's not that reviewers necessarily care who write the songs, especially when it comes to pop albums. Max is simply past his prime. His music that was released at the turn of the millennium is much better than this.
