Too many Senate Republicans up for election in blue/purple states. Obama will nominate someone and that person will be confirmed.

Hopefully, but I wouldn't count on it.
It may not even make it out of committee.

Can't wait to see another liberal appointed. We need another RBG.
And what is this about Scalia dying after a quail hunting trip in Texas? Dick Cheney teas.

Republicans are choosing between a delay and the White House in 2017 imo. They won't get both.
A historically long delay will be enough to galvanize Dems, who have needed something to be enthusiastic about this election cycle.

GOP has historically cared more about SCOTUS nominations than the Dems. If anything, it could lead to higher turnout on the wrong side.

If both sides have high turnout, advantage D simply because of demographics. But this is of course dependent upon who the candidates are.

I want to agree with you, but I would be shocked if we get a confirmation.

We'll see. I'm pretty cynical typically but with THIS much time left, I just don't think they'll be able to stall that long. Maybe if he had died in August.

The GOP presidential candidates are already calling for them to stall the nomination

I was reading about all the justices earlier, but I can't remember who it is now, but it was a conservative judge who was nominated during an election year to fill a spot vacated by a justice who passed in late January, and it was a Democratic controlled senate and they still voted on him and he ended up joining the court that August or something like that. But now the Republicans want to wait? It's ********.

Death is a sad thing. But I cannot feel sad about the death of somebody who used his power to deny the rights of others. I can only pray that in his next life, his soul will be a kinder, more enlightened one

A history of failed Supreme Court nominees:
21st century
Bush: 10/7/05 Miers nom, 10/27 withdrawn; 11/10 Alito nom. [34 days between first and final nom]
20th century
Reagan: 7/1/1987 Bork nom, lost by Senate vote; new nominee Ginsburg announced but quickly withdrew for smoking pot so wasn’t formally presented; 11/30 Kennedy nominee. [5 months]
**Nixon: 8/21/1969 Haynsworth nom, 11/21 lost by Senate vote; 1/19 Carswell nom, 4/8 lost by Senate vote; 4/14/1970 Blackmun nominee. [8 months]
Hoover: 3/21/1930 Parker nom, 5/7 lost by Senate vote; 5/9 Roberts nom. [49 days]
19th century
**Cleveland: 9/19/1893 Hornblower nom, 1/15/1894 lost by Senate vote; 1/22 Peckham nom, 2/16 lost by Senate vote; 2/19 White nom. [5 months]
Grant: 12/14/1869 Hoar nom, 2/3/1870 lost by Senate vote. 2/7 Bradley nom. [45 days]
**12/1/1873 Williams nom, 1/9/1874 withdrawn due to funds misuse scandal; 1/9 Cushing nom, 1/13 withdrawn due to Senate anger; 1/19 final nominee Waite. [49 days]
Buchanan: 2/5/1861 Black nom, 2/21 lost by Senate vote. Lincoln took over in March and didn’t nominate someone until 7/16/1862 - Miller. [17 months]
Polk: 12/23/1845 Woodward nom, 1/22/1846 lost by Senate vote; 8/3 Grier final nominee. [7 months+]
** & **Tyler: Congress hated him and kept blocking him. 1/9/1844 Spencer nom, 1/31 lost by Senate vote. 3/13 Walworth nom, 6/15 tabled, 6/17 withdrawn. 6/5 King nom, 6/15 tabled so failed. 12/4 Walworth and King renominated, 1/21 retabled, 2/4 & 2/7 re-withdrawn. 2/4/1845 finally chose Nelson, a nominee who was approved. 2/7 Read nom, void when Tyler left office.
[Nelson: 13 months. Grier: 26 months.]
Jackson: 1/15/1835 Taney nom, 3/3 postponed indefinitely, 12/28 same guy got renommed and confirmed thanks to a Senate shift. [Erm, 11 months I guess?]
Adams: 12/18/1828 Crittenden nom, 2/12 postponed indefinitely. 3/6 when Adams was out of office, Jackson got nominee McLean in. [79 days?]
Madison: 2/4/1811 Wolcott nom, 2/13 lost by Senate vote. 11/15 Story nominee. [9 months]
18th century
Washington: Weird one. Rutledge resigned from Supreme Court to get another justice job. A few years later, 6/28/1795 Washington nommed him for Chief Justice and due to being appointed while SC wasn’t in session he was technically Chief Justice till the actual vote which he failed on 12/15. 3/3/1796 Ellsworth nominee. [Erm...let’s say 3 months]
So Nixon, Cleveland, and Grant had to go with a 3rd choice after multiple fails. Tyler had to go with a 3rd choice after multiple fails, and then was out of office before presenting a 3rd choice for the other vacancy; the first one Polk came up with was also rejected.

This is absolutely true. A great book on this is Jeffrey Toobin's The Nine, which traces the conservative legal community's efforts to reshape the Supreme Court over the last three decades.
That said, Obama doesn't leave office for nearly another year. If he can nominate someone highly qualified and quickly, then the Senate will just look awful for holding up the process. It's a win-win for him.

but this actually has some pretty major political implications, especially since the next president is going to appoint at least 1 (maybe 2? i forgot) supreme court justice. i don't really know what's going to happen now.

He didn't care about the lives of other people his crappy rulings affected negatively. He went overboard chastising and hating minorities, women and gay people. I didnt even touch on the money is speech type issues. He allowed states to effectively take away black peoples constitutionally protected right to vote. Lets start there.
