Let's be clear. If Janet was guaranteed success just because she was Michael's sibling then how come her first two albums were flops. She had to work her ass off, if not probably even more because she was in Michael's shadow, one of the biggest damn shadows of music history and she was able to rise and make a name for herself. Sure she may of had easier access to connections but don't think she didn't have to work harder.
Not to mention she was still a woman of color. The 80's were not all that post racial. She too opened doors still being pushed alongside ladies like Whitney Houston. While another not that talented blond "queen of pop" with mediocre talent but a savvy knack for shock value was gaining success much more easily with less effort.
At the end of the day black women in entertainment have had to prove themselves 500 times over to cross over and gain equal recognition. Rihanna and Beyonce had to work there asses off to get where they were at and still come short in success sometimes to the white girls who only had to work half as hard because they were "easier to market"
