Beyonce owned it with the inauguration, the super bowl, major endorsements, a major tour that was the biggest for a female that year, constant media coverage year round and of course that surprise album release that topped 110 countries. The album didn't top even 10 countries (official charts worldwide)
It only topped ITunes world over for a while due to it's front-loaded nature.
Beyonce was the bigger celebrity that year, she generated more headlines but Katy sold way more records and did way better commercially that year.
Roar alone sold more than all the singles from BEYONCE...actually you could take all singles sales multiply them by two and they still didn't sell more than Roar
They sold about the same amount of albums that year too.
