15. Lydia Ainsworth - Right From Real
14. Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire For No Witness
12. Flying Lotus - You're Dead!
11. Tove Lo - Queen Of The Clouds
All of these are amazing, particularly Queen of the Clouds. I only found out about Lydia Ainsworth thanks to madonnas's countdown and I've been listening to her so much since. "Moonstone" is such a magical song. Angel is of course also wonderful. "Hi-Five" and "High & Wild" are my favourites! Flying Lotus I still need to listen to a bit more.
40. Broods - Evergreen
36. SBTRKT - Wonder Where We Land
35. Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
32. Azealia Banks - Broke With Expensive Taste
28. Sylvan Esso - Sylvan Esso
19. Lykke Li - I Never Learn
16. Various Artists - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Original Soundtrack
13. Bombay Bicycle Club - So Long, See You Tomorrow
11. Tove Lo - Queen Of The Clouds
All such good albums
Will definitely be checking out the others on the list, seems like we have similar taste
As far as solid indie pop goes, there weren't many albums that did it quite the way Wild Beats did it. Each song is beautiful in its own right yet it works together in a cohesive album. There are strong indie-rock elements and even indie-folk elements that are pulled in that help the album feel interesting all the way through. This was simply one of my most enjoyable listens and I have a feeling it will find a nice spot in my iTunes lineup.
Caribou's album is a brilliant work of electronic music that feels extra special thanks to its use of a variety of influences including R&B. The result is an album that feels really easy to get into and very enjoyable for pretty much any mood. The songs are brilliantly produced and I enjoyed the vocal contributions from other artists such as Jessy Lanza which reinforces the R&B feeling throughout.
Few albums were as lyrically impressive as Are We There. Incredibly stunning from start to finish, Sharon pours her soul out into every song and creates a perfect atmosphere. The songs are personal yet personable and the listener feels every bit of pain that she feels. The narrative created by her is so breathtaking you feel like you're right there with her. I also loved how her voice has the right amount of edge to give it an even more genuine feel.
I could probably right an entire essay on the brilliance that is "Queen". Perfume Genius utilizes a huge variety of different styles to create such an incredible album that discusses many personal topics. From the confident, eclectic brilliance of "Queen" to more subdued ballads like "Too Bright". There are even darker, twisted moments like the use of muffled incoherent vocals or general scratchy lyrics. He uses his confidence to defiantly talk about topics he wants to talk about and does it very well.
The new face of R&B has arrived. With all of the Janet influences, its clear that Tinashe knows what she's doing and is setting out to do exactly what she feels is right. Her album has the perfect amount of variety from alternative leaning songs to straight up DJ Mustard bangers. Each song is also done really really well with well thought out lyrics and a variety of vocal deliveries. This is a very solid debut and I can't wait to see her evolve into a main pop girl.
Solid top 10 so far! Wild Beasts, Caribou, and Tinashe, I obviously love. I think Too Bright is his best release so far but it's still full of so many piano ballads that I just don't like lol. I need to get on Are We There.
Give or take a 1989, this was my most enjoyable album listening experience. The entire album in one go is simply pure joy. The almost instrumental album does nu-disco very well and almost a million times better than Daft Punk did it last year. This is Todd Terje's first album (hence the name) and he did it exactly how he wanted and delivered a brilliant work of art.
One of (few) reasons i'm still on ATRL is because this is where I first learned about St. Vincent WAY back when in 2011ish when I first joined. Since then its been endless following her every move and worshipping every single piece of music she puts out. St. Vincent is wonderful. A brilliant varied work that demonstrates everything that is amazing about her as an artist. Compared to Strange Mercy is far more exuberant and extroverted which makes it harder to get into I suppose but the variety and the brilliant lyricism she is known for is back and better than ever.
mmm yes. I love it when you have a pop girl fave and she DELIVERS after announcing a big change. While some may criticize her songwriting for taking a dip, I'd actually go against that argument and say that her songwriting isn't weaker so much as it is different. This is a bolder, more confident and far more self-aware Taylor and what I love the most is how in control she is. She's always been in charge of her self and her music but you can feel it even more now. You know it was entirely her idea to do full pop, her idea to use '80s synth pop as a reference and her idea to write and create the most masterfully done pop album of the decade. And really, as a long time fan, that's all I could ever ask for.
Beautiful. Stunning. Addicting. All around brilliant. Real Estate is one of my favourite bands because they seem to just know how to make incredible music that feels both effortless yet important. Lyrically this is perfection, very detailed and very personal that hits really really hard. The songs are just so pleasing and bring out the right amount of nostalgia while still feeling fresh and exciting. I love them and I LOVE this album (as you could probably guess).
Undeniable masterpiece. From the first listen I knew that this album would be my #1. Simply stunning, brilliantly produced with such meticulous attention to detail. Each and every movement on this album was done in such a way to reinforce the powerful themes. There is such unique variety here from subtle sensuality to pure raw sexuality and her vocals reinforce that too with soft angelic vocals contrasted with bolder arousing vocals. Its such a modern classic although I agree its a bit out there. And yet I think that's its biggest perk is just how uniquely her it is. I am still in awe that this is this girl's FIRST album and she basically hit it out of the park. She is, my best, of 2014.
Todd Terje makes RAM seem like child's play tbh!
St. Vincent is obvzzz great as you already know.
1989 was disappointing for me, but I definitely understand why so many people enjoyed it.
Real Estate.... I couldn't get through it
LP1 is a good choice for #1! It definitely is a great listen.
Great number 1, great top 10, and great list overall. Well done! St. Vincent is such an outstanding album in every sense of the word. And of course TWIGS! I don't even know where to begin with her. Let's just say I liked LP1 a LOT.
*cough* She may have ranked rather high on my countdown as well. *cough*
I totally need to listen to Todd Terje. I feel like I'm missing out!
I have a fun little quick bonus countdown for tomorrow and then I'll start the songs on the 26th. I'll be back later today to post a full list of all the albums for those who don't want to go through the thread.
I can't believe we're at 11 pages Compared to my 2013 list this one is a smash.
Our Love is amazing! One of my favorite "new" albums! (new because I just listened to the album in full )
St. Vincent's album she has a great style.
I still need to check out "1989" in full but I love SIO and Blank Space
