I absolutely agree with you. Having no breaks is not an excuse for weak debut numbers. It's much harder to come back after a media blackout. Just look what happened to Nelly Furtado, Xtina and Avril Lavigne. I'm not trying to shade any of these artists but it should bNJe known by now that breaks can damage the biggest stars.
When you have a single on the chart every week for 4 years straight it will definetly effect your sales. A break can help you, if you end things on a good note. Like Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake, they came back strong because they left things on a good note.
WFL debuted with 160 k if im not wrong but is 5x platinum now
longevity is the key
This is just a testament to her star power. To sell 5 million of a single and not take any breaks is amazing. The only time rihanna has taken a break is between live your life and run this town and that was only like a few months.

She had quite a lot of songs get to #1 on iTunes on release week though, now that I think about it. SOS, Umbrella, Live Your Life, Run This Town, Love the Way You Lie, Only Girl and What's My Name? and Take Care all reached #1 on iTunes on release week iirc (I might be wrong about a couple of those).

Yea I have no clue what songs hit number one on itunes. I can tell you which ones hit number one on the billboard hot 100 though.
Anyway I'm torn on this weeks chart. On one hand I don't want blurred lines to snatch We found loves crown but if katy goes number one she will have the same amount of number ones as rihanna for this decade.
I can't at the excuses. Gaga herself said she made every song on Artpop radio friendly and to be a hit. The song is not alternative or non-commercial, it is in fact generic. Not to mention there have been real alternative song that topped the Hot 100.
