I love Melanie, 4am will always be my jam, but I dont here the connection between This Time and We Get By. This Time's
sound is based more in "Church Chords" with timbaland-esque drum patterns, We Get By on the other hand is Jazz based chords over more traditional hip hop drums. They both can be put in the RnB genre, but that's about it. You have to consider JoJo's market, Pop/RnB she's not going against the melanies, marshas, brandys, or keyshia's. She's going against Christina, Demi, Pink, and maybe Tori Kelly (depending on what direction Scooter Braun takes her). For this song to be generic in her market it would have to be your typical 4 on the floor dance song with a jazz influenced d'angelo/ jill scott sounding track, which by no means is generic, done before? yes, but not generic. It's like the saying goes, "There's nothing new under the sun." so if you're expecting her to come out with some brand new type of music nobody's heard, that's just impossible, but if you were expecting her to come out with something like this in the market she's in then you'd be pleasantly surprised.
