I guess it is difficult to understand if you're not a minority why things like BET, Black magazines etc. (same for magazines/television programming geared towards Latinos, Asians etc) exist, but, the mainstream IS White dominated. You don't have to seek out White culture when White is the status quo. And it's difficult for ethnic subcultures to be seen and heard among that. BET was established during a time when MTV would not play Black artists and music. White run radio stations would not play Black artists. Looking at an example in the print world, Vogue magazine has only had
14 issues featuring minorities of ANY kind -- since
1892. Most other mainstream publications have similar track records. Things like that created a huge demand for Black people and other minorities that would like to see themselves and their culture reflected in their entertainment.
