"Vogue" is one of the most legendary pop songs ever released. Gaga stans, go hide in a corner and stop comparing it to "Paparazzi" thank you very much.
She performed it at the Grammy's with Prince and I'd definitely say that performance qualifies. VMA's not so much. I remember it vaguely. Slave 4 U and Billie Jean qualify as well, imo.
Britney came the closest with "Oops..." the past decade :
- Memorable, very successful worldwide song.
- Iconic video.
- Performance embedded in pop culture.
Then she did it again with "Slave" in 2001 (though not as big as "Oops..." was in the US). I would have added "Toxic", "Bad Romance", "Single Ladies" & "Umbrella" but they don't have any memorable/ immediately recognizable performances. Great thread, by the way.
Britney's Slave 4 U, video and VMA perfromance shows up on every best of list in relation. And the song is listed as a catalyst for her, and the change in the way her contemporaries updated their sound and image.
It was a big deal at the time. The boob grabbing and the simulated oral sex were kind of unheard of for live television. One of the most iconic VMA performances.

Good point. I guess it's just me looking at it in a post-S&M world.
