Foreign Box Office: 'The Smurfs' Beat the Heat and Emerge No. 1
Weather is hotter than the box office in Europe this weekend as 'Apes' and 'Harry Potter' take No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
Bucking torrid temperatures across Europe, which depressed overall weekend box office on the foreign theatrical circuit, The Smurfs captured the No. 1 spot overseas with a gross of $35.3 million – down 34% from the prior stanza – at 10,590 screens in 54 markets.
The family-oriented 3D outing from Sony animation about those lovable blue creatures finished in the top spots in at least nine territories including Poland ($1.45 million drawn in its debut round at 129 venues), Colombia, Israel, Chile, Portugal, Austria and in Brazil ($3.9 million in the third round from 507 locations for a market cume of $22.2 million).
The Smurfs, which topped the foreign circuit for the second consecutive weekend, has accumulated total offshore gross of $211.4 million since it opened overseas on July 27. Worldwide, the tally is $329 million.

Around-the-World Roundup: 'Smurfs' Holds Off 'Apes' to Repeat on Top
August 23, 2011
Quote:
It was another big weekend overseas for The Smurfs, which topped Rise of the Planet of the Apes again for first place, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 reached what is probably its last major milestone in its incredible foreign run.
The Smurfs added an estimated $35.3 million from 54 territories. It debuted to $1.5 million in Poland and held decently in Brazil ($3.9 million), Russia ($2.5 million), the United Kingdom ($2.4 million), Mexico ($2.25 million) and France ($2.17 million). Its foreign total reached an impressive $211.4 million, blowing past similar movies like Scooby-Doo, G-Force and the first Alvin and the Chipmunks. Smurfs is just a few days away from topping Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel's $223.5 million total to take the all-time top spot amongst children's movies with CGI stars.

You Katy fans remind me of Xtina fans. This is not Katy's movie. People are not seeing this movie for Katy. I cant @ some people attributing its success to Katy.
Neil Patrick Harris has more star power in films than Katy.

Okay. But she still took part of the movie, so we have a right to be happy about it.

Yeah she did, but what he's saying is that people aren't going to the movies to watch/listen to Katy in the movie. This is not to discredit Katy, but the movie would have still made the same numbers had any other female actress did the voice of Smurfette

Who said that Katy was the Star? She's part of the movie and we're happy that the movie is smashing. That's all.

This. It's cool that Katy can find success outside music, and it would be crazy for her stans not to support her other endeavors, too
