(+) I first knew about this song because of Mr. Weird Vibrating Egg, but I found myself enjoying the song a lot. I love the Tik Tok/Cali Gurls-inspired synths and the dreamy chorus. The compulsory adorable bop of this set.
(-) Typical, basic, generic, boring, stale etc etc (still love it aye)

EXID - L.I.E


(+) Finally breaking through from yet another Wi Arae rehash, EXID served a refreshing bop this year. The contrast between the playful chorus and pumping breakdown makes the song. Did I also mention the lyrics of this song includes 'Go to hell'? Savage.
(-) We Can't Stop + Bitch I'm Madonna

Blackpink - Whistle

(+) By far Blackpink's best single this year, this song is hook after hook and the only one which comes close to seniors 2NE1's discography. Best parts include the pre-chorus, 'make em whistle like a missile' and the whistling loop throughout the song. Song also spawned this iconic moment.
(-) Blackpink songs are always lacking a solid banging chorus melody.

Soyu and Hyorin's exchange in the prechorus, they complement each other so well!

Luna's vocals, duh
The jazzy house production
The way the chorus erupts: IIIII JUST WANNA FREE SAMBADAY, making you wanna shake like Sohye in my avi (without the hands on the ears of course)

Typical cutesy girl group image, but definitely not a typical generic cute bop
Song starts out slow and calm then speeds up real quick in the chorus
The feeling of excitement and thrill as the chorus hits

Gfriend - Navillera

Rough was such a masterpiece they decided to remake a upbeat and 'exciting' version of it, and it worked
I love how the song builds up momentum after the bridge with the guitar solo into the final chorus
If y'all haven't tried screaming this song out at the karaoke, please do so now.

Dal Shabet - Someone Like U

Still surprised this was produce by Brave Brothers since it's so uniquely different from his usual works, the 80s retro dance sound was executed well
'Hey go meet someone stupid like you!'
Best part of the song obviously goes to the bridge, where the girls chant the chorus over the stomp-clap bass, stadium anthem style.

Girls On Top (Produce 101) - In The Same Place

As a huge fan of the "girlish pop" (direct quote from P101) concept, it's no surprise that this is the highest Produce 101 song in my list
This song beautifully captured the essence of nostalgia and heartbreak
Magical and lulling production

My song of the summer!
This song is the epitome of 'chill bop' - laidback verses and an atmospheric and breezy chorus
JYP's infamous breathy vocal technique shines in this song, especially the 'mwoya's

Bolbbagan4 - Galaxy

Placing 4th is Korea's biggest surprise breakout this year is indie duo Bolbbagan4!
Who knew a cheesy love song with a simple live instrumental could sound so amazing?
Once again, a flawless prechorus always makes a song

I.O.I - Very Very Very

And the catchiest K-pop chorus of 2016 goes to... neomu neomu neomu jakku jakku jakku
JYP took cues from K-classic Gee and basically improved on it 100 times
The production is very poppy and vibrant, possibly the fastest bpm I've ever heard in my life
The rap is surprisingly brilliant, considering the long history of tragic girl group 'raps' we had
I swear this song is one entire hook by itself

Why So Lonely too low!



Really pleased to see it in the Top 5 though. It was the first K-pop song that you played that caught my attention, and this kick-started my interest in K-pop and now look at me knowing most of these songs. It's my favorite foreign song this year. I love the lyrics, the production, and the video. My country would eat this sound up considering that it has a tropical vibe going on, but unfortunately K-pop doesn't really have an audience here. Very happy that I got to know it though, and it is now on my beach playlist.
