People say Jay-Z, which I think is highly possible, but so many other rappers' catalogs and artistry are more respected than his.
I'm thinking of these artists:
Outkast
Run-DMC
Eminem
Nas (I doubt it, but I hope)
Who else besides Jay-Z and those four?

2pac. Maybe Biggie or the Beastie Boys.

Yeah, but I think this has more to do with respect of creative craft, performance skills, etc. not chart success. I wouldn't be surprised if Usher makes the bottom of the list, but there are so many better and respected artists and entertainers out there, so IDK. Just saying. Critics aren't too fond of Usher.

Dude Usher has soldified himself to legendary status he has accomplished so much now already I'd be very shocked if they leave him off very shocked it would probably be an outrage since he is one of Billboard's most successful artists I have a feeling this list will be somewhat similar to this list right here http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/speci...tists-20.shtml

Yeah, those are good, too.
Well, Jay-Z is a sure bet, but where will he land?
LL Cool J?

Didn't VH1 do this countdown like 5 years ago?
Maybe it's a rerun.

You're talking about success, but these lists are usually filled with critical favorites, which Usher is not. I'm not saying that he won't make it; he has a chance, but don't be surprised if Usher isn't on the list. These kinds of lists are usually skewed.

I expect a Kanye appearance. He won't be very high, but critics love him (as they should ).
No way Outkast doesn't make this list if they're looking to fill a hip-hop quota.
What about country artists? Or is country music too insular for a list like this?

All I know is if Beyonce, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys are on the list Usher is probably on it as well because of his longeitivity. Confessions impacted the world somebody will probably get him in there

I was thinking about country artists. Shania Twain seems like the only possible one, but are there any other ones?

Can't say, but he's not getting pass 2pac.
I can see LL around top 80. There'll probably only be a few rappers though.

Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, & the Dixie Chicks are the only other real VH1 friendly choices imo besides Shania.

btw man since when did critics not like Usher? that doesn't make sense to me they never hated Usher I believe they always actually had praise for him for being the entertainer he is. I bet both Usher and JT make it.

Garth Brooks is the best-selling country act ever, but I never seem to hear much about him, so idk. But then again I don't really care for country music in general.
Johnny Cash, maybe.

I'm sure the list is gonna be filled with acts from the 80s and 90s and a very few from this generation, but it should still be really interesting to watch.

And don't be surprised if Mary J. Blige landed somewhere on the list. She is crowned as "The Queen of Hip Hop Soul," is highly respected by her peers and critics alike, has the longevity to back it up, etc. R&B probably won't be as strong on that list. Soul music will probably be stronger (Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, James Brown and a lot of artists from their era), but Mary has a good chance of representing our time.

And thats exactly it thats another reason why Usher oughta make this list because he is known as the King of R&B that title once belonged to R. Kelly but he ****ed it all up. ok I'm done now

Usher is known as "The King of R&B" by his fans. I've never heard anyone important crown him as such. Mary, on the other hand, is known by millions as "The Queen of Hip Hop Soul." But like I said, he may have a chance at getting in; just don't be surprised if he doesn't.

Queen Mary should definitely be on here, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's not since, as you said, contemporary R&B tends to be poorly represented on these lists.
I wonder how international (by which I mean outside US/Canada/Europe) they're gonna go with this. I doubt they'll have, say, Fela Kuti (though that would be really awesome), but maybe a Latin artist or two like Shakira.

I agree which you here. That's why I won't put too much emphasis on it, but if Beyonce is on it, it's not totally out of the question that Mary, one of the more respected R&B artists, is somewhere on the list. I was actually surprised she made the Rolling Stone's Greatest Singers list, even if it was at #100. There are so many better singers, but the industry seems to love her and her singing style. My Life also made their Greatest Albums of All Time list. Should be interesting to see if she gets in.

When VH1 did top 100 hip hop artists.
the top 5 was
1-run DMC
2-public enemy
3-tupac
4-Biggie
5-ll cool j (< What is this I don't even)
so I expect this list to be in the ballpark.
LOL usher? There are way too many artists from the 80's and 70's, usher has no place
