5 63 The Ting Tings "That's Not My Name"
After five rounds and many weeks of intense voting, we have a winner! But it was no runaway victory; all songs were ranked in every slot on at least one ballot (except for two that received no first place votes). Five songs remain, but only can emerge as the winner of Pop 40 Showdown: Best of 2009 Edition. Without further ado, the results:
In fifth place, with 22 points...
63 The Ting Tings "That's Not My Name"!
After strong results through the entire tournament, where they were never seriously challenge by any competitor, The Ting Tings ultimately came up short. But considering their major underdog status - at #63, "That's Not My Name" was lowest seeds left in the competition - making the finale is its own sort of victory.
In fourth place, with 25 points...
39 Cobra Starship f/ Leighton Meester "Good Girls Go Bad"!
After sailing easily through early rounds, "Good Girls Go Bad" was stuck firmly in the middle of the pack through finale voting - all but two of the ballots ranked it in third or fourth place. It looks like Cobra Starship's greatest fault was creating a song that almost everybody liked, but nobody truly loved.
In third place, with 30 points (and three first-place votes)...
55 The Veronicas "Untouched"!
Among the early ballots, The Veronicas were actually a strong contender for the overall crown. But by the end of voting, they had garnered an equal number of last place rankings. Is it a product of the song's divisive nature? Or has the excitement and support for "Untouched" - which has actually been floating around since summer of 2008! - simply started to wane?
In second place, with 35 points (and three-first place votes)...
54 Boys Like Girls "Love Drunk"!
For me personally, this was the greatest surprise of the entire tournament; I simply don't ever remember "Love Drunk" being all that popular. Yet it emerged as a true spoiler contender for the crown, with a majority of ballots placing it among the top two songs and only one ranking it last. However, though Boys Like Girls actually led the tally at one point, they ultimately could not match the tremendous popularity of...
10 Kelly Clarkson "My Life Would Suck Without You"!
With 38 points (and four first-place votes), "My Life Would Suck Without You" is your pick for the best song of 2009! And after dominating early rounds - this song barely had a single vote cast against in its four head-to-head match-ups - it is only appropriate it would emerge as the victor of the entire competition as well. Considering that this merely extends Kelly's domination of the regular edition at the end of last year (with "Already Gone"), I suppose I must crown her the official queen of Pop 40 Showdown. Congratulations!
With that, I would like to announce that this is the final Pop 40 Showdown tournament. Though I have really enjoyed putting on this game, I feel like the effort it takes for me to run is not matched by its popularity among ATRL members. For the time being, I would like to concentrate on other endeavors. But I have a strong affection for this game (because it was my own creation), and in the near future, I would love to bring Pop 40 Showdown for a second season, perhaps sometime in the spring or summer.
Finally, I would just like all of you that participated and support this little experiment of mind, especially regular voters like Evan, Razzle and davidcg20, who have been here since the beginning. This game would not have been possible without you.
