That other one can find success without generic songs .. But it seems that we'll have some in the next album.

Worthy of praise:
6. Russian Roulette
7. Fire Bomb
11. Te Amo
Regular Rihanna:
1. Mad House
2. Wait Your Turn
3. Hard featuring Jeezy
4. Stupid In Love
5. ROCKSTAR 101 featuring Slash
8. Rude Boy
9. Photographs featuring will.i.am
10. G4L
12. Cold Case Love
13. The Last Song
|
Cold Case Love & The Last Song are not regular Rihanna songs.
& I can do the same with 4.

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with pop/upbeat music. Music can be critically acclaimed AND connect with the masses at the same time. Is it too much to want that from our faves?

I dont agree, because if songs like Rude Boy, Hard or Gangster 4 Life are as personal as it gets for Rihanna then she has a lot more to learn about herself and life in general. She will release a personal album when she gets ready to and Rated R was not it.

Born This Way is a terrible example of "good" pop music. Whether "inspired" or generic. I think most of us can agree on that, regardless of what side we're on.
|
I find it so silly to read how some of her fans talk about Lady Gaga's music as if it's somehow revolutionary and "better" than Britney, Katy, Madonna, Rihanna, Christina, etc.'s music.
It's absolutely not. She's just as "bad" and generic as the rest of them, but they seem to be blind to that because Marry the Night has a personal 9 minute introduction about Lady Gaga in the video and because Judas has religious symbolism in its music video. That doesn't make the songs not generic. Only You and I out of her singles I could argue isn't generic.

To be fair, at the time it really had sounded like this was a very personal album. "Cold Case Love" "Photographs" and "Stupid In Love" all could've been somehow related to the CB incident.
It wasn't until TTT, when she recorded Drunk On Love (Stupid In Love's contradictory sister) and backtracked with the BD rihmix that the album lost most if it's meaning.

But Lady Gaga is actually one of the worst. Her songs are just as generic as Katy Perry's imo. Especially when you take away the lyrics.

Never.
Born This Way was a under-performance, but none of the Pop girls out there would dare put out an album as risky as that, and still manage to sell 6 million copies WW. Let's give GaGa her dues.
We all saw how the Rated R era nearly killed off Rihanna's career, with Rudeboy being her saving grace.

Well actually, Born This Way, Judas,Marry The Night don't sound so different to me,
4 is an album that you can call 'uncommercial'.

How is an album with 20 writers, like Rated R, where only 7-8 songs have Rihanna as co-writer a personal album?
Not to mention Rihanna herself said Rude Boy was the song she wrote the most on the whole album

And 'Scheisse', 'Heavy Metal Lover' doesn't sound so different to me. After all, Born This Way doesn't have that much 'quality'.'The Fame Monster' remains her album with real quality.

You don't have to write something in order to CONNECT with it.
If you don't see a difference in quality from Rated R to LOUD, then I'm not really sure what to say.

It is Rihanna's own fault for denouncing the personal aspects of Rated R with her recent antics.

I know the lyrics can be controversial, but if Lady Gaga wants to be risky, she should've released an album fully jazz and rock songs.
Eminem did a song about a guy beating up his girlfriend, and had RIHANNA sing the chorus, and the song was #1 for weeks, sold millions. That's more controversial than saying you're in love with Judas imo.

So if I release an album written by my friends where I collaborated in a few songs, it's my personal album?
Yes, I see the difference. I think it's her best album, but...personal? Also, the recent events show what they show.

I can't take anyone seriously who listens to pop music for substance. Pop music is, always has been, and always will be fun music. Sure there's an occasional ballad here and there but pop music has alway been fun. If someone wants substance go to indie, or R&B
