Fine. I'll give a review.
1. Don't Gotta Go Home 5/10
Don't know what's worse, the interlaced sample in the back, or the unoriginal use of a melody for the chorus. Oh wait, I know what's worse, the fact that this is the most generic and overdone idea for a song this year alone. I really want to like Jason DeRulo; mostly 'cause there aren't any big, male, pop superstars, but this song is not a selling point.
2. It Girl 6/10
These lyrics are trying TOO hard. The whistling melody is catchy, but I can't get over that this is a pop song trying to be R&B. I can't like it as much as I want to. I could compare this to "I Choose You" by Mario, but only by a margin; each are R&B songs with a heavy pop appeal, but "I Choose You" has a more likable factor than "It Girl". And I am not going to say a damn thing about that trying to go falsetto, except that it fails.
3. Breathing 9/10
Finally, a song I can get behind. This song is actually a really well-done dance song. Not pop, not electro-pop, but dance. The idea that someone misses their love only when they're breathing has been overdone as well, but there is something likable about the way he represents it. Almost like, you could lose your breath singing this song to someone you love. And the sample adds flavor to it. This, so far, is my "In My Head".
4. Be Careful 3/10
Uh-oh, the beat dropped again. Are we trying to do R&B again, Jason? Again, trying too hard. He should just stick with Pop. I believe the real problem with this song is that it's completely forgettable. It sounds like something I've heard before; like a bonus track from a Step Up soundtrack.
5. Make It Up As We Go 8/10
I'm bringing SexyBack... Oh, wait, that's not this song. Sorry, I could've sworn that's what I was hearing in that verse melody. I won't lie, the beat sounds too much like Timbo and the lyrics sound too much like JT. The strange thing about it is that it works. I don't know if it was intentional to make this sound like a JT ripoff, but it's a really good ripoff. This is definitely something I could have heard on FS/LS, but I like it more for JD. It's a good look... more like this DeRulo.
6. Fight For You 5/10
Up and down, up and down, up and down. Is every other song a mid-tempo or something? And we're back to taking lyrics that don't belong to us again, huh, Jason? It's too bad that this uses an overused sample, because I know that "Anything" by Jojo did this much better. This song did not need those melodies, but I will admit RedOne does give him a banging beat. Too bad it sounds like it was a slow-down version of Bad Romance or something. It's like there's something wrong about this song in every way, but it's not as forgettable or horrible as "Be Careful".
7. Pick Up the Pieces 4/10
...of my/your heart/love... before I even have to hear this song, I know that's the theme. At least we're finally following a theme of sappy mid-tempos now. So, you already know I don't like this song as much as I do the dance songs. He can't do mid-tempos mostly 'cause he is not giving good lyrics for these songs. I hope he realizes this soon, 'cause this is a semi-forgettable song.
8. Givin' Up 5/10
I don't even want to fully write a review for this song. It's another sappy and overdone mid-tempo. Forgettable and unoriginal. Don't like it.
9. Bleed Out 7/10
Uh-oh. JD gone hood? JK, this song has good lyrics, a sick beat, and is catchy. My only gripe: the falsetto he uses for the hook. Not the greatest sound to hear, but it's not the worst thing about the song. It's how HARD he's trying to be in this song when we were just talking about picking up pieces of love and giving up finding a love since he has one, then he talks about crying and trying to make it sound HARD. It's not hard Jason, it's not hard at all.
10. That's My Shhh 1/10
Let me take a wild guess. This song was made by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream. No surprise, it sounds like an excerpt from The Love King or Basic Instinct. How much am I loving this song? NOT AT ALL... I bet a mill someone is going to say that "ooh, I like this song... which TREY SONGZ album is it from?" Jason needs to realize that he has a style and a sound, and it's not R&B slow jams, it's not Pop mid-tempos, and it's not someone else's song as the chorus. This officially is the worst song on this album.
11. X 10/10
OMG, WHERE THE HELL DID THIS COME FROM? This is what I've been waiting for, DeRulo. This is the party song of the entire album, not that Don't Wanna Go Home crap. I could sing this out loud and not give a shhh about who hears it.
I am still in love-love-love-love with my X. This is my favorite song, by far, from Jason.
12. Dumb 8/10
And we're back to crap... or maybe not. This might be the best slow song on this album. I wish he didn't have all the unneeded effects or the syncopated drum pattern at the end, 'cause this song is beautiful by itself. And his voice actually perfectly matches the song. I won't call this a favorite, but it's one of the best songs on this album.
13. Overdose 6/10
Should I say it? Fine. JT, stop abandoning your songs for people like Jason DeRulo to pick up and kill. And kill I use in a good way and a bad way. Again, this song has JT/Timbo written all over it, but it's not that bad of a carbon copy. I just wish there was something I could get behind that makes me like this song more than Make It Up As We Go, but it's not a bad song at all. Hopefully, this won't become a direction for DeRulo next album (if he has another album...)
14. Give It To Me 7/10
First Timbo, then Trey Songz, now Neptunes. Can we have one song on here that's not a stolen product? Uh, can I like this song? Yes. Do I? Kinda. The verses should be annoying but it's fun to listen to, and the chorus should be hateful, but it somewhat knocks. It's just going to be another song to me, though. At least it's not forgettable or bad, though.
