Okay, seriously, how have I not gotten to know Sin With A Grin before now? HOW?
This thread is really informative and has been long needed for someone such as myself, who is sort of lost when it comes to all of the new members roaming around ATRL. And since this has turned into an "introduce yourself" thread, and because some of you probably only know me for being here for so long, allow myself to introduce...myself.
First things first: I prefer to be called Red around these parts and I have been called Ryan by those in the know for as long as I can remember (LONG story), but my actual first name is Brandon, for future reference. I don't know why I hate being called by my real name so much. And it's not just online, either. I actually prefer my college people to call me just "B". I'm odd, I know. I'm 24 years old (YOU OLD FOGEY!) and I will hit my ATRL ten year anniversary in July. I don't know whether to feel proud of that achievement or terrified that I've been here THAT long. I guess it can be a mix of both. I'm currently a student at the University of Kentucky as a journalism major. If you've ever seen one of my year-end threads, suddenly, my tendency to write a LOT about my favorite things makes sense.
If there's one thing that I'm known for beyond being an old fogey, it's being, arguably, the foremost rock fan on ATRL. I say arguably because I'm not a mod anymore, unlike a certain Johnald and JGibson. But I'm not just limited to rock music. In fact, the only music that I outright refuse to listen to is gospel. As a matter of fact, most of my favorite songs to listen to right now are not even close to rock. I mean, hello, "Born This Way"! I don't really "stan" for any artist, but Muse would be the one if I did, and I have been known to stan on occasion for that awesome British band. Old habits also die hard, because most of my favorite bands are older bands: Korn, Motorhead, The Beatles, Deftones, Pearl Jam, Rammstein, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Alice in Chains, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Rolling Stones, etc. My love of rock music is in an endless cycle of stages; right now, I'm in my metal stage, but I have a feeling that I'll be getting into more indie music very soon if my cycles hold true.
On ATRL, I am generally who I am in real life: Nice, ready to defend myself when needed, but also guarded about what information I give out to people that I don't know very well. I can probably count on one hand the people that I trust enough to talk to about the darkest aspects of my life. That does NOT mean that I am not accessible or friendly to those that I don't know. I'm generally friendly to everyone around these parts. While my best friends have been moderators or are moderators, I am an equal opportunity friend and am willing to like and talk to the newest newbie just as much as the oldest legend. I've also been just as likely to lash out at you for either getting on my bad side or doing something particularly terrible, but I've mellowed out a LOT in the last couple of years. I still have my moments, but they are just that.
One thing that you may or may not know about me is that I love words. Love them, love them, love them. I love reading words, I love spelling words and I adore finding new words to use. My favorite exercise is to find a word that I use often (let's say "horrible" or "terrible") and find a more striking word to describe my feelings ("egregious"). I think that my love of words has been a lifelong experience. I began to thoroughly read the newspaper at age 2 and was a speller extraordinaire at 10. I think that I could have made it to the National Spelling Bee if I tried to study and work harder, I was that good at spelling. I made no effort to study or work on my spelling abilities and still almost made it to state. I still wonder how far I could have gotten if I put my full effort into it.
That's actually the story of my life. I really don't put a lot of effort into my life, or, at the very least, not as much as I should. I've been able to coast on my ability to procrastinate up to the last hour or so before I have to complete a task up until now, so there's never been any real urgency to try any harder. I already feel like that those tendencies are starting to bite me in the ass, though, so maybe there's still hope for me after all. I also cannot seem to make up my mind on what I want to do with my life. Years of doing music podcasts (and ATRL LIVE, of course) have made my heart grow fonder for being a radio DJ, but I would be lying if I said my dream job was anything other than being involved in sports broadcasting. I am a DIEHARD sports fan, maybe even more so than music, and my dream is to call the games for my favorite sports team (the University of Kentucky men's basketball team). I guess I still have time to decide, but I know that time is beginning to run out as well...just as time is running out on this post.
We're nearing tl;dr territory (if we haven't hit it already), so I'll just stop here. If you're interested in learning more about lil' old me, though, don't be afraid to ask!
