Racism and homophobia are both ****** things that shouldn't be encouraged. It doesn't have to be this and/or mess.

Ya. When people start comparing apples to oranges, you know the conversation is dead. So I'm out. ddd
In leaving I will say that, in the grand scheme of things, adopting lingo isn't a big deal. It's the stuff like saying "I'm an independent, strong black woman" or glamorizing being "ratchet" that's the problem. It's a caricature of what it really is to be a black woman in America. It rides on stereotypes and is, in my estimation, the new manifestation of "black face".
When you have to use the black identity to paint yourself as wild and wreckless with "twerking", "ratchet", "ghetto" etc., you're doing that whole race a disservice.

That's exactly what I'm saying... this lady is acting like white gays don't/didn't face oppression. Sorry I'm not black and gay.

I used "ratchet" only because of the original post I replied to. Gays are usually sassy everywhere in the world, it used to be in the past (Oscar Wilde) and it will be

They say that, like, 4 times before they hit 20 years old.

So true. In complete 100% agreement. Well stated.

I think if I read the word oppressed or appropriation one more time I'm gonna puke. You're all a bunch of counter-productive troglodytes. Like, shut the **** up. Rosa Parks is turning in her grave. And mama Ru is turning in ha circular bathtub.

You summed it up perfectly, Vanessa.
If I hear one more person call something "soooo ratchet."

NEWFLASH: Black gay women have been in the scene (including the ballroom scene, and yes, check Paris Is Burning for women in the film for all the fools whose education on this comes solely from that movie) and have ALWAYS been using this slang. Stop acting like this is something that originated from gay MALE culture when that is not true. Stop embarrassing yourselves.

1) I wasn't the one who brought up Paris is burning initially (and even mentioned it was merely a documentary of an actual LIFESTYLE)
2) never claimed that gay men CREATED the slang in these films
I merely stated that there are common cords within the two "groups" of people. Things aren't as black and white ( ) as the writer of this article and some posters think they are (not implying ur one of them for the record).

I just didn't understand why black people's struggles needed to be pointed out in the article as if they were entirely unrelated to white gays, when in fact both groups face extremely similar struggles.
I didn't like the way she seemed to belittle gay struggles as if it's just something that can be turned on or off as you please, either. Surprised Time published the article really, it doesn't exactly read very professionally

I totally agree with you.

But not the point of the article.
"cannot hide their blackness and womanhood to protect themselves the way that you can hide your homosexuality"

Not y'all thinking I was tryna drag I'm black, gay but I just think everyone should have freedom even if it seems dumb to others.
Y'all have to realize even if she is right these "annoying rachet white gay men" aren't going to change their opinion based off of a Times post.
So does this **** even really matter?

White gay guys can twerk, use slang like "ratchet", "hunty", and act ghetto if they want to. It's not like they're bringing back slavery by doing so. I always stick to the ideals of the 1st Amendment when it comes to freedom of expression.

There was a documentary about how that type of music came from gay underground clubs and eventually went mainstream and straight people started to use it too.

My guess is she probably has been around these types of males before and as a result made this article. I just feel like this is America if white gays want to take listen to Beyonce all day and twerk their ass of while screaming "YAAASSSS BEE YASS slay me" that's their life and their choice but who are we to say stop being who you are.
Once again I wasn't try to be shady by posting her picture (she's not even ugly).

It's so embarrassing watching you all argue against this brilliantly written article that you obviously didn't read.

Spill it. I don't do any twerking or anything like that, but who cares if someone does?
