In the Night is cute, My House as well. I wasn't feeling the latter for a bit but then I enjoyed it, but not enough to download the song or anything. Still better than other musical attempts he's done recently.
This isn't cute. I broke my promise, and I'm now behind two updates– the alarm bells are ringing. I'm less busy tomorrow than I was today, though, and I won't have tennis practice and Monday Night Football to distract me. I have to make up an update tomorrow.
If this is the last good pop song Meghan Trainor ever releases, she didn't exactly go out with a bang. Me Too's production is cheap and disjointed (tambourines to go along with an electro-pop bassline?), and its "I'm proud of myself" message is far less convincing than it was on All About That Bass. I'm just going to illogically blame Jason Derulo for these negatives, because he hasn't done anything good lately. For several months earlier this year, though, I found the hook to be irritatingly catchy; it's fairly low-key, which saves it from corniness. Meghan already seems fatigued by her involuntary transition to more generic pop music, though– she sounds much less genuine here than on her debut Title, which featured a bevy of tracks with laid-back tropical influences. But for now, she has to fulfill her contract, and this wasn't a bad way to do that.

Giving French spelling lessons is a first for Jeremih. But there's a lot more to talk about with this song, like the way he casually draws out his words in the verses ("it's no better feeeeellling, you know / when I'm next to herrrrr, for suuureee"). His style gives the track a very cozy, relaxed feel. The elaborate hook, meanwhile, showcases Jeremih's class, functioning as a non-explicit invitation to his woman; the stripped-back bridge works as well. Trap and urban AC are both represented in the beat, which I find to be a little bit too noisy during the verses but otherwise quite pleasant. oui is a very chill listen bolstered by a positive message and a simultaneously cringeworthy and amusing pun. It also had a surprisingly high amount of replay value for me considering that I don't think there's anything outstanding here– it's just a really solid slice of R&B.

It was a really bad idea to construct a song around a corny backronym, and an even worse idea to make it both the song title and the entirety of the chorus. The song represents a shift away from FGL's bro-country past, an attempt to appear more authentic at the expense of fun. Ironically, though, the overly sappy piano chords allow H.O.L.Y. to come across as even more contrived than some of their older songs like Cruise and This Is How We Roll. As a result, it's a lot less fun and a lot more banal. The bridge is laughable, with Tyler Hubbard's autotuned half-screaming layered lazily over the piano, which suddenly sees an awkward key change. It is baffling to me why this song was popular at all, let alone the biggest country hit of the year by a gigantic margin.
While it was the perpetually discounted SeeB Remix that turned this song into a moderate hit, I prefer the already-upbeat original. Adult pop was, for the most part, quite vapid in 2016; Hymn For The Weekend is a clear outlier. It's simple and inoffensive but not bland, and the vocal layering is well done. I'm also a big fan of the piano melody and clapping throughout the track. Chris Martin is fully within his comfort zone here, and the band seems to have finally come to terms with their niche this year after questioning it with 2014's A Sky Full Of Stars. The song is everything it needs to be– anthemic, infectious, and sweet. Even if Coldplay can't offer up innovation anymore, they can still make particularly good HAC radio fodder.
