The album is not bad but it's very samey so it drags on and gets boring but some of the songs are good, I like Patience, No Promises, Bad Reputation & Lights On.
Ruin is a huge mature step-up from his past material. I like the old school sound to it.
Mercy is amazing.
Treat You Better is catchy.
I just bought the album and will continue to listen to it. I hope it's better than Handwritten. I'm giving him another chance. I liked over half of his debut, but they dragged on and it got boring.
But yet again, he's more of the acoustic kind of guy. People who like John Mayer, for instance, would probably enjoy his music. He's not an artist to go to overrated producers who work with Katy, Britney or Lady Gaga.
Probably not, this is Shawn Mendes we're talking about
A slow album doesn't bother me if the songs are still good.
Three Empty Words is awesome as well. So far the first four tracks are promising. Handwritten isn't an album I ever went too, but it had some decent songs that stuck out. I hope Shawn plays around with his sound on his third album, going in the direction of Britney's Blackout and is all upbeat and with some crazy production. But I doubt it.
I'm just listening this for the first time, I'm on 'Patience' right now. I think it's a sweet album with a good vocals delivery but unfortunately it all blends together. So far 'Treat You Better', 'Honest' and 'Ruin' are the only ones that stand out to me and also 'Three Empty Words' to the lesser extent.
I hope Shawn plays around with his sound on his third album, going in the direction of Britney's Blackout and is all upbeat and with some crazy production
I think the best songs so far are Patience, Ruin, and a tie between Lights On & No Promises
The worst songs so far are Like This and Don't Be A Fool (sorry...)
I'm listening to Bad Reputation and it's not bad? I don't know why people say it's bad. I like the production behind it. You have to realize Shawn is very monotone so it comes down to the production. I'll have to re-listen to Don't Be A Fool and Like This since those are the only tracks I didn't immediately like at first listen.
Really? I liked the production towards the ending. It saved the song for me. The first half, yes is boring, but the production value gets really great towards the last half.
It reminds me of Rihanna's "Drunk On Love." The first half was alright, but then by the second chorus you get this "La la la la" eerie chanting in the background (and continues in the chorus for the rest of the song) and it made the song so much better!
Alright I finished the album. Listening to Mercy (Acoustic) now.
I found this album to be an improvement from Handwritten. I did re-listen to Handwritten this past week and realized it wasn't that bad either. Each album has it's strengths and weaknesses.
Shawn isn't the artist you really go too if you want to party or bob your head while driving with your windows down. He's more of a 'mature' artist who you just lay back and enjoy when you want to relax.
Thanks for the Illuminate Shawn. I'm hoping by the third album he plays around with who he works with and his sound changes.
