So we're in the Autumn of 2010. After the trainwreck that is known as 'Sweet 7', 4.0 somehow didn't get sacked by the label and they got the green light to record new music. In the beginning of 2011, queen of downtempo middle 8's Heidi Range enlightened our soul by letting the world know that the Babes were releasing a new song in the Summer of that year.
Before even getting to premiere the song on the radio, they announced that their longtime record company Island Records actually did get rid of them, and that they had signed a three-album contract with Sony Music. (What's happened to that?)
After finally receiving a radio premiere in August, the promotional trail finally started rolling. The official release suddenly didn't seem that far away. But there was one big problem: nobody gave a flying ****. The general public didn't, radio's didn't... (it failed to make the Airplay Top 100. That says a LOT.)
So on the 22nd of September, a mere four days before its official release, the girls decided to scrap the release of the single and give it away for free. How hilarious is that? Imagine if one of ATRL's big girls did that.
Oh, how far they've come.
The history of this song might be remarkable, but the song itself isn't that bad after all. It's what 'Sweet 7' should have sounded like. People tend to not take 4.0 seriously (nor do I), but when you try to, you'll find a decent pop song with an even more decent dubstep break. 6,5/10.
The next song leaving for tonight was released as the 3rd single of the 'Sweet 7' album, and the 2nd single 4.0 released. The single was produced by Fernando Garibay, and written (partly) by Bruno Mars. Still, the song sounds cheaper than a 'Killer Love' leftover. The song somehow failed to be a chart trainwreck, as it managed to reach #7 on the UK Singles Chart.
The video shows the gerls doing all sorts of semi-interesting dance moves in front of a green screen. But that's it really.
The definition of mediocrity. It's not horrible, like 'Walk This Way', but it's not really more than decent in any bit. 5,5/10.
I have to admit WTW is sort of a guilty pleasure for me, though. The other two are some of the most embarrassing attempts at having a catchy hook I've heard in my life.
And that was the very first (real) lead single leaving the countdown. Just like 'Wear My Kiss', the song credits Bruno Mars as one of its writers. The song features an interpolation of Right Said Fred's ''I'm Too Sexy''. (............)
It was actually the last single to feature founding member Keisha Buchanan. She revealed that the inspiration for the song came ''by accident'', saying:
Quote:
The producers were messing around going, 'I'm too sexy for the studio'. We were like, 'That sounds cool', and [the producer] said, 'You remember that Right Said Fred song?' We were like, 'Do you think we can do it?' By accident it came together.
If only that accident did not happen.
Somehow, there was quite an amount of hype surrounding the release of this track. In the midweeks, it was #1, ahead of ''Run This Town'', by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye. But eventually (thank god) the song lost this #1, as it entered the charts at #2. Miraculously, this song turned out being the Babes' 8th best-selling single, outselling Sugaclassics like ''Overload'' and ''Stronger''.
When I first heard this song, I was in shock. I couldn't believe the girls were releasing THIS. I still find it not-so-good nowadays, but from time to time it's a nice guilty pleasure. 5/10.
Released in October 2008, this song features a rather dull interpolation of ''Here Come The Girls''. One of the many reasons 98% of the Sugas despise the song. It's much like a cover with some verses randomly attached to it.
Besides being a dissapointment quality-wise, the song also proved to be dissapointing on the charts. It entered the chart at #8 (because of digital downloads), and only managed to peak at #3: their first lead single (of an album) to not hit #1 effortlessly since ''Overload''.
The video wasn't any more interesting. It features the girls dancing in a club. Keisha even took pole dancing lessons for it. Not even that could make the video seem any interesting.
I know that this song is universally despised by all Sugafans. I don't really hate it, but it's not good. The horns are actually quite decent. 6/10.
