She's not lying, she's fitting in the picture her label painted for her. They tell her, 'you're going to release a new album, tell your fans how much you love them and that this is for them.' And she will do that because she doesn't have a choice. I don't actually think Rihanna is aware of her decisions (artistically.) She just records whatever feels good to her. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but she'll never progress like that.
I have nothing against dance songs, I love them, and I love 'Dancey' Rihanna. I don't want no old Rihanna back, I just want to see Rihanna evolving instead of degenerating. And yes, you can make quality dance songs, Only Girl is one, and there's a Grammy win for it to prove it.

But either way, your post was unrelated. The person was talking about debut sales and digital sales. FLOP POST!

So basically, Rihanna is a mess for caring about the success of her music?
Not all artists have to be extremely deep. I mean, take a look at the top 10 on Billboard/iTunes and point out all of the songs that you would classify as deep to me.

Sis, even S&M has more "substance" than Cheers.

Rih has a troubling dilemma in front of her.
Will she do her own thing and start disowning songs like We Found Love and actually show why she deserves to be a star? Or will she keep on letting her creative team making the most commercial jingles and become the biggest label puppet of today's industry?
Either way, she loses. And that's why I think it won't take much longer until the show's over. Some of the Navy are already getting their flippers and their diving glasses ready to swim over to the Bey Cruiser or the Brittania.

How is that not quality music?

Loud
California King Bed
Man Down
Complicated
Skin
Love the Way You Lie Part II
You could even argue that OG and WMN? are "quality music". CKB and MD in the list above are arguable, though. My point is that these songs are all quality music and you're overlooking them completely.

My thoughts exactly. Rihanna only makes music that applies to how she's currently feeling. Yes, she does typically record music written by others, but does that make it any less personal? Of course not. Rihanna isn't going to be singing about being heartbroken and betrayed when she isn't feeling that way. Loud is a good example of that, actually. Where are all of the dark, sad breakup songs? Nowhere, because she wasn't going through that. The only songs that are even remotely close are songs like "California King Bed" and "Complicated", which relate to feelings of confusion and distance. Anyway, back on topic; I agree with everything you've said. She's still very young. She still has plenty of time to experience more love and heartbreak, which will determine what kind of music she records in the future. I don't feel that Rihanna has released her best album yet. You know what I mean? She has plenty of time for that.
Imagine if people gave up on, say, Britney Spears when she was just 23. They would have never been able to fully appreciate Blackout.
|
I don't understand why we have to be all freaked out over anything. She's TWENTY-THREE. She has plenty of time to grow and prove what she's capable of. Hell, her music is pretty high quality for a 23-year-old if you ask me.

Now sis, I stan for Britney Spears as well, but the same could be said about her.
The same could be said about MOST pop artists, actually.

What people don't realize is that the public, in general, wasn't a huge fan of Rated R. Yes, her fans did love it. But other than that, it wasn't a very popular sound for Rihanna. If people are eating up her "generic, fast food, whatthe****ever" music, then so be it. Once people stop buying the music, then maybe she'll change up her sound, but if you needy, picky, choosy stans are yearning for the Rated R days, then go pull up Rated R on your iTunes, listen to it, and stop bitching about her current sound.

WHAT?
Cry and Haunted are not even ON THE ALBUM. Dem Haters has no substance what so ever. You're forgetting the most substance filled - A MILLION MILES AWAY.
GGGB has NO substance what so ever. Rehab is the closest. Take A Bow is not even on the original album.
MOTS is all wrong. IILTYW, Music of the Sun, The Last Time all have substance.
As far as Loud - California King Bed, LTWYL Part 2 and Man Down all have substance.

It's deep enough for me and deep enough for people to love it without Rihanna having to try hard or promote it hard. Just check out how it performed on charts, and then look at Man Down. I knew from the start that it would be an instant hit, and that CKB and MD would flop. But noooo, I'm just a hater.

In a matter of fact, yes. That line might be silly when you think of it that way, but actually, it can be interpreted in many ways that describe a person feeling while in confusion and depression. Surely it has more 'deepness' than "Oh Mama, Mama, Mama, I just shot a man down."

I never said that. She ain't no deep artist tho. She's all about her image and milking the latest sound. It's the truth.

That original was eminem's song. All she did was add and subtract a couple of verses. It's also just ONE song.

Which is exactly how Rihanna is credited for the Art Design and Executive Production behind her last few albums.

And the girl in your avatar does? What Pop star besides Lady Gaga does any of what you said? Beyonce occasionally, but Katy Perry, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Ke$ha, none of em do.

I think Rihanna needs to start writing her own material. I really think she's capable of it, and she can profit from it + get more respect as an artist. I've always wanted an album from her where she dosent have a cloud of producers all over the writing credits. I want rihanna to work with one or two producers for one whole album and collab with some kick ass songwriters and contribute GREATLY to the songwriting process. Rihanna needs to be more hands on with her career. She does not need YES men around her, really I feel like she is the yes man. What her label/team presents to her, she goes along with it. For once, maybe in the future I hope, I want rihanna to sit down and come up with an idea or central theme for an album on her OWN. I want it to feel original, like she actually put thought into the process of a new era, not just have it all over the place. Only in my dreams would this stuff happen. I just can't see it right now. Rihanna just wants to have fun right now.

LOUD is the second best selling female album this year? I thought Adele was #1 followed by Gaga with BTW? any way, that's besides the point, and you bringing up Britney is irrelevant yet predictable, that's not what this thread is about so let's stay on topic. Brit. doesn't have to worry about current album sales, because unlike Rihanna, Britney is already established and proved herself to be an album seller & tour seller LONG ago, she's the best selling female artist of the 21st century for a reason, Rihanna has still yet to grab a #1 debut album in America even after all her #1 singles, and she only recently sold over 200,000 copies in the 1st week with loud. Most people in the U.S. look to Rihanna for catchy pop songs, not her albums.
But I think it's cute you tried to derail the thread off topic because your faves is being discussed.

She can do just as little yet still be credited. It means nothing. Her label can credit her anyway without her having to do anything, actually.

Man Down did not flop. It was released to Urban and Rhythmic radio's and went Top 10 and Top 15 respectively. And sold 400k. Thats excellent for an Urban/Rhythmic only single.
California King Bed was a minor flop - but it still sold 700k for only having 20 mill AI.
