The YECA: Top 100 Singles of 2014! (100-91)
We kick off the 2014 top 100 with an artist that just hasn't been able to hold my interest for long, no matter how hard I try to stay interested. Theoretically, the duo known as Broods should be right up my alley, but really, I've never been able to connect with them. "Bridges" is a solid song by any estimation, though, and it deserves to make the top 100...if only just.
Andrew McMahon is probably not a name that too many here will know, and that's okay, because there's a distinct chance that he was before your time. I remember Andrew for two things: His time with Jack's Mannequin, and, more importantly, his time as the mastermind of Something Corporate. Something Corporate created one of my all time favorite songs in "Konstantine". "Cecilia and the Satellite" is no "Konstantine", but few songs are, and that's fine, because this song is more than content to just be an excuse to reintroduce Andrew to the world.
I really struggled HARD with The Gaslight Anthem with this most recent album. I wanted to like their most recent album, Get Hurt, but I just wasn't a big fan of the direction they took with their music on this album. "1,000 Years" is a bright spot, however, and it immediately stood out as a top track on an album I couldn't quite get into. It doesn't stack up with their best work, but it's the kind of catchy and enjoyable music that caused me to fall in love with The Gaslight Anthem in the first place.
I'm definitely doing this song a disservice with its low placement on this top 100, mostly because there's no chance in hell that "Stampede" was REALLY my 97th favorite single of the year. It probably deserves to be top 50. So why isn't it top 50? Honestly, I have no idea. It's easily one of the most kickass tunes of the year, brought to us by masters of kicking ass in Accept. Come back to me in a year and I'll probably still be bitching about where I decided to put "Stampede".
And here's another song that I'm going to regret placing as low as I did by this time next year. "Lightning Bolt" is one of the key highlights off of Pearl Jam's most recent album of the same name, and a song of such quality isn't really deserving of barely making the top 100. I just tended to forget about the song's existence for most of the year, hence why it dropped down to where it is right now. As always, Red in 2014 = no buys.
This is otherwise known as the song where I discovered that my everlasting love of Korn wasn't quite as "everlasting" as I thought it was. This is not to say that I don't still love Korn, because I do! I will always, ALWAYS have a soft spot for Korn and their role in my growth as a fan of music, and I will always enjoy listening to the Bakersfield boys. And "Hater" probably would have hit me pretty hard five years ago. But the current me just couldn't quite get into the song...or even the band itself as much as I used to be.
I feel like "I Wanna Get Better" should have been a bigger deal than it was. A side project for fun. member Jack Antonoff, Bleachers released a decent enough album and a better single, entitled...well..."I Wanna Get Better". The song did top the alternative radio chart here in the US, but it barely made a blip on the radar of the mainstream, which baffles me. It sounds like it would have been right up pop radio's alley, especially in 2014. Sometimes, this world just doesn't make any sense.
Rise Against and I have a very rough history. There are times where I have fallen in love with their music (see my infatuation with Siren Song of the Counter Culture) and then, there are times where I just don't care for them at all (see their two most recent albums). "I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore" is my rocky relationship with Rise Against in a nutshell. There are parts of the song that remind me of how much I used to adore Rise Against, but there's just something about the song that irritates me. Do I know what that is? Honestly, I don't think so. But there's something about Rise Against that causes me to take a couple steps back upon any encounter.
It's around this point of the top 100 where I started to struggle with the order. Honestly, I found 2014 to be the most closely contested top 100 I can ever recall putting together, and that's most readily apparent with #92, Jack White's "Would You Fight For My Love?" In previous years, this is much, MUCH higher on this very list. In 2014, it can't even crack the top 90. Like with "Stampede", though, I'm surely going to regret placing this kickass and heartfelt tune as low as I have in the future.
Speaking of songs that illustrate how closely contested the 2014 top 100 was, look no further than the return single of tUnE-yArDs, "Water Fountain". Even as someone who was underwhelmed by Nikki Nack, "Water Fountain" is undeniable in its quality. It does kind of feel like it would have belonged more on w h o k i l l than on the following album, but, in this case, that's a good thing, because those moments were few and far between on Nikki Nack.

Hey, we're ankle deep into the big one! (Well, the first big one.) Finally! As an aside, I'm still not really content with the layout, honestly, but it is what it is. I'm sure that you guys will probably like it more than I do. Or maybe you'll like it less. *shrug* That's probably not what you're here for, anyway. Okay, enough talk about the silly layout. Oh, and if you're wanting to listen to the songs in this top 100, make sure to hover over and click on the banners for each song, or whatever song you want to listen to at any given time.
Next set, of course, will be 90-81, which I hope to get posted tomorrow...key word there being "hope". That will feature the first of two singles from someone who I fell madly in love with in 2014 (and not just for their music), the first (and, in my opinion, inferior) single of three from a returning band whose album that I'm, seemingly, the only person that loves it, the one single from an artist I missed out on BADLY in 2014, a single from a female singer who I didn't really get previously, and a duo who had an executive producer on their latest album that has to be seen to be believed. See you all then.

It took me a while to enjoy Bleachers' music, but now I like them, especially I Wanna Get Better

I have loved Rise Against since I first heard Suffer and the Witness (one of my favorite albums ever). They are one of my favorite bands for sure. Tim's vocals are so damn good.
LP/Rise Against are doing a tour and not coming to VA

...at an average age of forty-something, Korn's still titling their songs things like "Hater"???
I really used to love them. I did.

Oh, The Chevelle Red, when I saw your top 100 has been posted, I hurried up with my first update of my top 200 to comment on your first update of the top 100. Now, I’m here to comment.
Haven’t listen to Broods a lot , but I liked Bridges and Mother and Fathers. Bridges is nice, quietly done song that I appreciate the soft tones of the song and the background electronic element. Oh, this guy is from Jack”s Mannequin? Anyway, hearing this song for the first time and I like the Alt. pop vibe of this song. It’s all that good catchy and positive fun stuff to listen along to. I liked 1,000 Years and Get Hurt from them. Hearing Stampede for the first time and on the first seconds of this song, it already blew my mind. The guitars riffs and the banging drums! This should’ve been higher, but hey the mindset is tricky when compiling a year-end countdown. I felt this way too. The vocals are solid. Reminds of a more kickass AC/DC song. Stampede! Lightning Bolt is good, but too bad I never knew it was a single. Haven’t paid much attention to Korn lately. Maybe it’s because what you said about them. I Wanna Get Better! Better! I Wanna Get Better! Better! Better!
I Don’t Want to be here anymore is nice. Would You Fight for my Love? Is good, I should listen to tUnE-yArDs one of these days. Been neglected to do that since 2012 when I heard of them. Great first set. Solid commentary as always. We got to keep going with you and this top 100 and your layouts and me and my top 200. 200! Hope you can provide me with some more music. Is Linkin Park one of those hints.

Side note, nice that Lady Gaga charted in 2011!

Bridges! I love that song. Reminds me of Lorde a lot. Bleachers' song is really nice too. I think I prefer JAck Antonoff over Nate Ruess.

IDWBHA is pretty good. The rest of that album is a bit lackluster however.

Water Fountain is my fave... the only Broods song I really liked was Pretty Thing, but maybe I should listen to them again.

Well yep, I knew Royal Blood would be #1, because they're that awesome. Rockin the freak out and all that.
Haven't heard the Damien Rice album so I'll have to check that one out.
