I think people are basing that off of Kesha's last two singles, Rihanna's "Right Now," and "Pound The Alarm."
Songs with the producer as the lead artist have been doing well enough, though. "Sweet Nothing," "Don't You Worry Child," "Scream & Shout," and even "Clarity" have all seen their share of success. Just, so far this year, the only dancepop song by a pop girl as the lead to smash has been "I Knew You Were Trouble."
And of course, this is only concerning the US, which is where trends are more concerned than the rest of the world. We seem to be the only country where we have a distinct urban wave, followed by dance-pop, alt/rock, then followed by urban again. She can easily smash with dance in Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and Canada.
