I mean she has a unique voice, but in SNSD's biggest singles I don't think she adds that much. Yoona is definitely pointless vocally. I was watching a performance of The Boys and I didn't even realize Yoona was not there until her part came up. Tiffany sang her parts better and she was unneeded. However Jessica was missing from The Boys performance one time and it was a disaster, Tiffany covered Jessica's parts and it was a mess.
SM does too much with Hyoyeon. They always have her in the background and in some songs she only sings one word. (Gossip Girls).
Yes, Yoona was missing from their Gayo performances this year and I genuinely didn't notice she was gone until I counted 8 instead of 9, and even then I had to actually think about who was missing. I guess visually she's good to look at, but I feel like SM don't even give her that much time visually. You definitely see her the least in the Mr. Mr. teaser.
And I think SM splits the group up well, though. Like Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun being top tier lead vocalists, Sunny, Jessica and Yuri being the next vocalists down, still having a good amount of music time, and Hyoyeon, Sooyoung and Yoona being mainly image based. I'd love for Hyoyeon to have more of a part vocally. She's the best dancer though.
Actually that's a good idea, she can work on a chorus. But I wouldn't be here for a whole solo album of her voice. Even a mini would be going too far.

What I've noticed is how Tiffany,Jessica,Taeyeon,Seohyun and Sunny depending on the song take the lead. Yuri is backup even though she is vocally competent and Hyoyeon?.. well yeah
Hyoyeon has so much potential. That performance she did with Henry and Yuri when I Got A Boy came out.>>>>>
Yasss. I was thinking of this performance. Yuri and Hyoyeon definitely need to be in a dance subunit.
Hyoyeon is also the most popular in Europe/US, she always gets the most screams there by far, so I don't know why SM pays her dust so much. I get that she's not a conventional beauty, but she is a great performer and has talent on the stage.

I think SM realized that Yoona is too overrated especially with all her endorsements, her dramas and the recent dating scandals etc. They are scared that people will get sick of her.
I actually think Jessica is a stronger singer than Tiffany. When Tiffany covered Jessica in The Boys she sounded SO bad, she had health issues with her voice so I think she's swapped with Jessica as a second tier vocalist. SM usually put Taeyeon, Seohyun and Jessica as the main vocals, they did this in the US as well.
Jessica wasn't in the subunit because Taeyeon was there, but I think she's a better singer than Tiffany personally.

This is very apparent in the japanese material.
On the Japanese material Seohyun and Jessica get more vocal time which I like because some of SNSD songs are too Taeyeon heavy and her voice can get annoying in the higher range (e.g. Genie).
SM did put Hyoyeon as a lead rapper in The Boys and that Chinese OST Find Your Soul but Hyoyeon deserves more than that.
1st. Vocals.
She's not a strong singer and all the vocalists on snsd probably do a better job than her.
2nd. Her beauty
Yeah the girl is pretty and hot but she's not korea's definition of "beauty" like for example Sulli, Yoona, Suzy and basically all the visuals.
I think in the group her main role is as a dancer, i mean even in maxstep
she sang how much? 35 seconds?

These are valid reasons for her presence in the group but why doesn't SM put her in a subunit or give her a solo stage? I don't get it.
Her vocals are not the best, but they aren't much worse than Yoona or Sunny (when she sings live).
Plus she has an edge because apart from Seohyun and Taeyeon she's the member that speaks Chinese well, and money making SM definitely has their eyes on a China debut for more cash.
Why exactly is Yoona still singing? I mean, SM seem to not want to let go of giving her at least 5 lines in each song, when she offers less than Hyo vocally.

Apparently Yoona's part at the start of The Boys was Tiffany's part originally, but SM gave it to Yoona to make her have more stage time. That's why Tiffany has no singing parts in that song even though she's a lead vocal which I found weird.
Yoona is just too overrated. I don't hate her, she works as the visual, but SM needs to stop prioritizing her all the time. She gets way more lines than Hyoyeon even though she's a worse singer.

Yoona is pretty overrated. But SM know she's pretty and is arguably the main visual for the group. I wouldn't suggest throwing her out, but I think it's sad she fails to have any impact in the group for me.
Eh... I sort of agree and disagree. I think Tiffany is a stronger vocalists in some situations while Jessice is in others. I always feel tension between the two of them though, I think they have the biggest egos. IDK, I think I'll always see Tiffany playing a more crucial part in the group vocally. Both are great though. I can't imagine something like Twinkle sounding good with Jessica instead of Tiffany. I think Jessica's vocals can be a bit whiney sometimes.

I sort of agree with these points too, but I find it kind of funny this is the case, because from what I've seen Hyoyeon has so much fan love I'd argue she was the most universally liked. But yeah, it's funny how the reflection from the Korean general public is so different.
