The production of Applause is amazing, it sounds like a video game and gets me excited/pumped. The lyrics are really great too, especially the Koons is Me line. The pre-chorus is, like, the best ever.
Marry the Night is a masterpiece and I hate that some people think it's bad just because of it's commercial performance (which wasn't even that bad at all).
The only bad thing about Applause are the lyrics of the verses. Other than that, the song is a solid 8/10.
It's fine but it's just not that good. It's not really a masterpiece. And it bombed because it was NEVER going to be a good single, I called that from day 1.
The praise that I'll never understand is Applause. That song is bad, it's simply bad. You just don't like a song for it's chorus and ignore the rest of it.

Marry the Night WAS supposed to be the lead single, and it's video would have been directed by Nick Knight, not Stefani Germanotta.
It would have been a much bigger hit than Born This Way. It only flopped because it was the 5th single of an era where Gaga was releasing a new single every two months. The overexposure and underwhelming video killed it.
Hm, it still goes on a party/if you are in the mood to dance so i'll give her that. I just don't listen to it anymore, just like the rest of the album.
