Katy leaves her Belfast crowd Roar-ing for more
She came and she conquered. Just like Cleopatra who she dressed up as. Yes, Katy Perry's adventures in Belfast could almost rival the Giro for excitement. Almost.
Perry opened her world tour in a packed Odyssey Arena on Wednesday night with her number one hit Roar, dressed in a light-up crop top and skirt and her dancers as techno warriors. With spears that change colours and glow in the dark body paint. Her show is divided into themes, ie costume changes.
First was the electric tribal mix. Next was the egyptian theme that featured a mechanical gold horse for her song Dark Horse. Gold's pretty bright, you would think, but it looked good anyway, which was the main goal.
Perry wore a Cleopatra wig and a body suit that read "Pharest of them all", a nice pun which should have been more noticeable. Her breakthrough single IKissed a Girl came under this theme and featured dancers dressed as spiders and weird mummies with exaggerated breasts and bottoms.
There may have been some social commentary hidden there, but if there was it was too subtle.
The highlight of the night was Catoure. Kitty Purry performing Hot n Cold with the ensemble of Cats.
They then put costumes on top of the cat costumes as the stage be came a catwalk.
With berets, sardine boxes and cages, the cool cats danced to Madonna's Vogue before the star cat tried to recreate the Flashdance moment. The one with the water.
Only this was with a giant bowl that said milk and it must have been heavier than expected as it took a couple of tugs before it tipped over. It wasn't milk in the bowl though, just white confetti.
A 90s nostalgia section included a dance mega mix which gave all of the dancers a chance to show off. It also gave the audience a chance to appreciate the pipes the backing singers have when they sang CeCe Pinston's Finally.
Perhaps the strangest part of the night was the inflatables that came out and went around the stadium.
There was a giant lipstick, a handbag, a bottle of champagne, Katy's Taco and a large poo. Or a scoop of chocolate ice cream.
It had a smiley face and is an emoji that you probably have on your phone. Either way it was weird.
The show ended with an explosive rendition of Firework.
Complete with fireworks and a dress that lit up like Katniss ever deen's in The Hunger Games (in case you haven't read the books or seen the movie, she wore a dress that looked like there was fire when she spun around).
The show is full of bright pretty lights, lots of costumes, is superficially pleasing and technically complicated.
Katy Perry is one California Girl who knows how to entertain.
