Four new releases hit theaters for the Thanksgiving weekend box office, but none seem poised to overtake the juggernaut that is "Harry Potter."
Disney's "Tangled" is the most likely to make an impression, but the film's marketing seems to have had less of an impact than even last year's under-performer "The Princess and the Frog." The movie's ads seem a bit schizophrenic. They seem to be trying to draw in young boys, but the movie seems too bright and pretty to appeal to them. Still, "Tangled" is family entertainment with the Disney name and that alone should guarantee solid numbers out of the gate. I expect it to pull in about $10 million on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a weekend gross of about $27 million. "Tangled" may barely make to the $100 million dollar mark by the time it ends its run.
Cher returns to the big screen alongside Christina Agulera in the new musical "Burlesque." While Cher hasn't been a box office draw in decades, "Burlesque" may fly simply because the ads make it look like a lot of fun. It looks like a solid choice for teenagers, though I doubt it will have great legs in the long run. Expect about $16 million for the weekend and $25 million for the five-day opening. "Burlesque" will likely close with about $55 million.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway are angling for Oscars with "Love and Other Drugs," the erotic romantic dramedy from director Edward Zwick. Both Gyllenhaal and Hathaway have so-so starpower, but the fact is, if you're not a fan of either of the leads, there's really no reason to see this movie. It will likely manage more than $12 million for it's opening weekend and $19 million in five days. This one may make its way to a $40 million total.
Sure to be the biggest failure of the four new releases is the action thriller "Faster," starring Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton. The movie seems like a relic of the 80's and I don't mean that in a good way, as I would with "The Expendables" or "Predators." There's nothing appealing in the advertising and Johnson has yet to prove he's a major star. THis one will fail to make $8 million over the weekend and will likely claw its way to $11 million in five days. It might see a total of just under $25 million.
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One" set a record for the series last weekend, collecting more than $125 million. Critical and audience reaction has been great as well, meaning this could be on the way to becoming the most successful "Harry Potter" movie yet. It may fall 55 percent over the weekend, to about $56 million. Still, it will likely collect $80 million in five days, I expect "Dathly Hallows" to wrap up with about $325 million.
Meanwhile, Russell Crowe's thriller "The Next Three Days" is an instant-flop, collecting less than $7 million last weekend. It will likely lose showtimes (if not screens) this weekend, meaning a strong 55 percent drop is likely, down to $3 million. It may make $4 million over five days and looks en route to a $15 million total.
10. THE NEXT THREE DAYS (-55%) - $2.9 million/$3.9 million
9. MORNING GLORY (-42%) - $3.0 million/$3.9 million
8. DUE DATE (-33%) - $6.0 million/$8.3 million
7. FASTER (new) - $7.6 million/$10.5 million
6. UNSTOPPABLE (-37%) - $8.2 million/$11.3 million
5. MEGAMIND (-35%) - $10.4 million/$13.9 million
4. LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS (new) - $12.7 million/$18.5 million
3. BURLESQUE (new) - $16.5 million/$25.0 million
2. TANGLED (new) - $27.5 million/$37.0 million
1. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART ONE (-55%) - $56.2 million/$80.0 million

I'm thinking Burlesque has a shot at a GG nomination. The Golden Globes love to nominate at least one musical in that category, even if it's got bad reviews and box office.
Year: Movie [Tomatometer Score/Domestic Box Office]
2010: Nine [37%/19M]
2009: Mamma Mia [53%/144M]
2008: Sweeney Todd (won) --- / Hairspray [91%/118M]
2007: Dreamgirls (won) [78%/103M]
2006: Walk the Line (won) --- / The Producers [51%/19M]
2005: Phantom of the Opera [33%/51M]
2004: None. But there weren't any musicals that year.
2003: Chicago (won) ---
2002: Moulin Rouge! (won) ---
Burlesque is the only musical this year so i don't see it missing on a nomination. Plus its RT score will probably stay between 55-65% and only in its first week it will do around 20M; it will end up grossing about 60M domestic. (Better in reviews/box office than Nine, Phantom of the Opera and The Producers for example)

Another bad review added to RT and it's down to 56% :-/

Where Toulouse Lautrec meets New Orleans, the Burlesque in Los Angeles—not unlike Christina Aguilera's Back to Basics—is a blast from a nonexistent past. Catching a reflection of this hole in the wall from the windows of an upcoming high rise, small-town Iowa farm girl Ali (Aguilera) waltzes in and, after flexing her brass and ingenuity, her star is born. Burlesque the film, then, is not unlike Glitter: To quote our own Eric Henderson, it's "a Make Me Pretty Barbie version of a camp classic." But unlike Glitter, it's far from camp. Neither smart nor oblivious, it's just another one of Aguilera's totems to her narcissism, and the proof is in Nikki's (Kristen Bell) enraged response to her competitor's rapid rise up the food chain: "I will not be upstaged by some girl with mutant lungs."
It would seem that Aguilera's regard for retrograde musical forms spills over into her taste in films. Burlesque is a star platform built from obsolete parts that predate Cher's first facelift, recalling the cacamamiest of Brady Bunch episodes—or some Depression-set save-the-farm drama from Hollywood's golden age. While Ali hungers Nomi Malone-like for the spotlight of the Burlesque stage, Cher's Tess—torn between her take-the-money-and-run business partner (Peter Gallagher) and stick-it-out-to-the-end best gay (Stanley Tucci)—must figure out how to pay her mortgage. Enter the bionic cash cow that's Aguilera's melisma, heroically unleashed from the girl's mutant lungs after Nikki deviously pulls the plug on the song Ali must lip-sync on stage. Like many have wondered since the former Mousketeer broke onto the scene in 1999 with the great "Genie in the Bottle": How…does…she…do…it? "It just happens," she says, almost modestly.
Yeah, girlfriend can out-sing just about anyone in the biz, even Mariah Carey these days, but that's about all that Burlesque is interested in showcasing—that and Cam Gigandet's ripped torso, which I'm almost sure gave my next-door seatmate Rex Reed a minor heartache. As she did on Back to Basics and Bionic, Aguilera straddles lines—between old and new, new and future, bombshell and burlesque—with a seemingly deliberate lack of irony. She rejects that sense of knowingness that has suited others before her, like her idol Madonna (as on the brilliant I'm Breathless), but Aguilera's arrogance is such that she feels she doesn't need to be smart because she, unlike Madonna, can actually sing. But that isn't enough. When the best you can say about Burlesque is that it isn't as bad as you expected, you know it has failed.

I can see the point of the review. Based from the trailer and the soundtrack, it's all about Christina and perhaps, this was the main catapult for critics to hurl at this film.
