Finally, a non-80s video leaving! This one mostly focuses on style and fashion rather than having a storyline. It highlights the highs and lows of Hollywood and apparently she portrays some actresses and all but I didn't bother looking that up. The video was directed by longtime collaborator Jean-Baptiste Mondino, whose other work with Madonna will come back later in the countdown.
After its release, the son of French photographer Guy Bourdin filed a lawsuit against Madonna, accusing her of ripping off the work of his acclaimed father. In the end, they reached a financial agreement, but the exact amount of dollars payed couldn't be discussed.
An OK video. I won't miss it. Strange though, how she shows plastic surgery as if it's a bad thing while we all know her skin is a little too tight and her cheeks are a little too full...
Another not-so-memorable video leaving. This one was shot by Herb Ritts in July 1989 at Paradise Cove Beach, Malibu, California. Besides Madonna herself, the video also features three mermen (including her to-be boyfriend Tony Ward). These mermen were later seen as a symbol for the homosexual community and the oppression it faced.

Sadly, we'll have to see another early 80s video leaving... This one portrays Madonna as a Hispanic girl with a Latin-American man as her boyfriend. She meets a photographer, with who she gets together, but ultimately she chooses her original boyfriend anyways. The portrayal of the street life reference the beginning of her career in New York, but the world of popularity and success she was starting to enjoy were also referenced in the video.
With the video, she broke the taboo of interracial relationship and therefore it is considered by some as one of her career-making moments.
I like this video a lot actually! The storyline is not really my piece of cake, but it's the imagery that really attracts me about the video. It's really cute. It's sad to see this (and other early 80s videos like 'Virgin') leave so early, I think they deserved more.

It's a shame this one already leaves. This very personal video was (one of) Madonna's attempt(s) to embrace and accept the death of her mother. It shows a little girl playing in the snow, as her mother dies. A grown-up Madonna follows the child as she runs away from her abusive father. A scene featuring the dead mother in her wake with her lips sewn shut (inspired by Madonna's own memory) was described as one of the most disturbing scenes in the history of modern mainstream music videos. Madonna commented on the scene:
Quote:
I had to deal with the loss of my mother and then had to deal with the guilt of her being gone and then I had to deal with the loss of my father when he married my stepmother. So I was just one angry abandoned girl. I'm still angry. The part of me that goes around saying "**** you! **** you!" is the part that's covering up the part that's saying "I'm hurt!" I guess all of this came through in the video.
Despite all of this, Rolling Stone listed this video in their 'Top 100 Music Videos'.
Shame on you, ATRL, for making this video leave so early! It's a real standout in her videography for being one of the few attempts in her career at accepting and embracing her mother's death. Confession: I didn't really bother about this video before doing this write-up (), but next time you participate in such a thing, make sure you are well-informed before making career highlights like this leave early.
