Okay but can we talk about this lyric:

“He was trying to skip rocks on the ocean, saying to me, ‘Don’t you see the starlight? Don’t you dream impossible things?”

Notice how she didn’t say, “he was skipping rocks,” she said he was trying. And she didn’t say he was trying to skip rocks on the pond, or the river, or the lake. He’s standing on an ocean shore, tossing tiny pebbles at huge waves, hoping they’ll skip.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to skip rocks on the ocean? Skipping rocks is typically something you need still water for. Even the smallest amount of choppiness is going to make it pretty difficult. On an ocean shore, waves are constantly crashing against you, the beach, and each other. Ocean currents are one of the strongest forces on earth, and tossing pebbles against that force and expecting things to work in your favor is absolutely insane.

But he doesn’t care that what he’s doing seems impossible. He doesn’t care that it hasn’t happened for him yet. He’s going to keep trying anyway, because not trying would be just as useless and maybe, just maybe, he’ll be the person to beat the odds.

It’s such a small, simple metaphor for such a hugely important idea: Who cares if the whole world says you can’t? Do it anyway.
