Katy Perry - Dark Horse (Audio) ft. Juicy J77 968 336
She should start taking risks with music videos. DH video is and will remain a joke. Her best song and the worst video (don't @ me , Birthday isn't a music video)
Is it really that bad, though? Compare it to her other videos for uptempos like "Roar," "California Gurls," "Part of Me" (lol), "Firework," "Last Friday Night," etc. It's all tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top cheeze. "E.T." weirds me out. The OOTB videos were fun, but nothing spectacular. The same can be said for "Unconditionally" (except it's boring--yeah, it's well shot, but, ultimately, boring).
Considering she didn't even want to shoot "Dark Horse" at the time (haha), it turned out pretty well for a green screen -- certainly better than "Baby Don't Lie." The color scheme was smart: everyone expected something dark, and it was in vivid color. If it were really that bad, it wouldn't have as many views as it does (see: "Birthday"). A lot of money went into it, too.
I don't get the whole "visual artist" schtick from her or anyone else. The only successful artsy video she did was for her worst single, and man, it really needed it. Visual artistry was Lady Gaga's "appeal" (no comment).
Katy's appeal lies in her knack for creating impeccable pop music, her ability to keep it real, her wit, and her looks. "Dark Horse" was already colossal when the video was a picture of the Prism cover. Her best video remains pretty boring (and boner-inducing): "Teenage Dream," which was also kind of like the OOTB videos. It was plain, but perfect.

I find the Teenage Dream video more boring than Unconditionally's video. I remember getting chills because of the great car crash scene in Uncle's video, it's very beautiful and as you said, well shot. The flower petal special effects are a little OTT though.
E.T. video has yet to be topped by Katy or another pop girl since it knocked everyone out of the game in 2011 IMO. Floria!
Taylor's team has everything planned so well, especially singles. Katy should have gone for the managers, not the dancers Maybe the diss song would have been better as well
E.T. is stunning and no doubt her most beautiful video but the first half is pretty boring. I get the whole "I'm an alien queen slowly turning into a human" concept but it goes painfully slow.
Not a big fan of the "guy trapped inside a robot" either.

For people who swing either way too.
This post is the gospel though.
But I will say that WUIV was spectacular.

PRISM could've been bigger than TD had she handled it well but nope. She had to release Unconditionally. Which when you think about it, she wrote it for John Mayer. And she released Birthday a few weeks after the break up. She was clearly emotionally distressed and wasn't ready for a new single but the hoe wanted something other than Dark Pony on the radio so she released Birthday and her team allowed it. Who releases Birthday when you have flawless masterpieces like WOA and LL ready to slay the GP and overshadow Dark Pony?
My point is: John Mayer destroyed the PRISM era.
I don't even want to know what was going on with her when she even considered TIHWD as a single.

Uncle was her fault. TIHWD not (well she agreed but still) . The problem is that she has too much power now, while her team has no idea what to do. Just like Gaga, when she was a puppet everything went perfectly. It's not shame to leave the promotion to the specialists when you contribute to the whole creative process, that's what they are for after all. Taylor's team doesn't play around. Out of The Woods is like her Unconditionally but they demoted her favourite song on the album to a promo single and chose a future big smash as the 2nd single, regardless of what she said. That should have happened to DH. Alas, it was not meant to be.
