Honesty, I think they were hinting at Rihanna. This "8 anchors for 8 letters" theory doesn't really match because if so they would've left a space between the first 3 anchors & the next 5 (SAM SMITH) I think. :michael;
Then there's few people who know about the "Little Sailors", while most people know that Rih's fans are called the Navy. Why would the Grammys hint at Sam Smith when it's obvious he's performing, he has 4 or 5 noms and has been performing at almost every award show this year. When you hint at something it's usually for some surprise.
And one of the dancers who's rehearsing for the DIRECTV show & the other upcoming shows also tweeted 8 anchors with "Who else is ready for R8?", that girl is literally involved in the making of Rih's upcoming performances so I think she's aware of what's coming.
