After Atlanta we started to be brutal with what sports got funding - if you under perform at the Olympics your funding is cut and the sports we do well in get the money that you lost. A bit cruel, but its clearly getting results considering how much we've shot up since 96. There was also a massive rise in funding from 97 onward in general.

Guess in Beijing, London and Rio there has been a bit of a hosting boost as well.

We have four more golds on 19, the same silver at 18, but they have six more bronzes on 18. Only one medal difference in total 49-48.

While true the most important factor is the overall increase in funding thanks to John Major introducing the National Lottery.
