Interesting facts about casting in the Scream franchise:
- Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were the actresses Kevin Williamson had in mind to play the roles of Chloe and Rachel in Scream 4. Instead, the roles went to Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell.
- Melissa Joan Hart and Alicia Silverstone were approached to play Sidney Prescott, but declined the offer. Brittany Murphy received several call backs from her audition, but the role of Sidney went to Neve Campbell.
- Breckin Meyer was strongly considered for the role of Randy, before it eventually went to Jaime Kennedy.
- Drew Barrymore was originally cast as Sidney Prescott. But, scheduling for other shoots conflicted with one-another and she, herself came up with the idea of playing the opening death of Casey Becker for the shock value of an international star being killed in the first 15 minutes of the film.
- David Arquette auditioned for the role of Billy, but took a liking to the role of Dewey and later received the part.
- Brooke Shields and Janeane Garofalo were approached to play Gale Weathers. Both declined.
- Actress Rebecca Gayheart auditioned for the roles of Sidney and Tatum in the original film and also auditioned for Hallie and Cici in the sequel. Each audition was unsuccessful, and she was eventually given a minor role alongside Portia De Rossi.
- Twilight actress Ashley Greene was strongly considered for the role of Jill Roberts in Scream 4. But, the role was given to Emma Roberts, who had to die her hair from blonde to brunette in order to contrast with her on screen cousin, Sidney.
- Kate Hudson was originally intended to star in Scream 3 as the opening kill, Christine. Even a blurb for the VHS release a film she had just finished at the time contained information on her staring in Scream 3.
- It is rumored that Kate Winslet was approached to play Christine.
- Lake Bell was given the role of Judy Hicks in Scream 4. But dropped out just 4 days before filming due to scheduling conflicts. The role was the filled by Marley Shelton (

- Lauren Graham from TV's Gilmore Girls had originally secured the role of Jill's mother, Kate. But, dropped out only days into principal photography.
- Nico Tortorella, who plays Trevor in Scream 4, has to audition for the role 5 times before securing it.
- Sarah Michelle Gellar signed on to the sequel, Scream 2, before even reading the script.
It really makes me wonder if any of these sequels to the original would have been made if these other actors were cast. The Scream trinity are really committed to their franchise
Another fact, Joel from Scream 2 (Gale's cameraman) was originally apart of Sidney's friend group and had a major role. But this and many other changes had to be made to the film when the script leaked on to the internet.
It looks like a slasher film - my favourite horror sub-genre.
