Yes, Gaga did it previously on Logo, but the point is that nobody really cared about her or the performances and thus Gaga wasn't catapulted into the mainstream consciousness. Pretty much a very small Gaga fan base and Perez Hilton took advantage of Christina's polarizing effect on the public (on one hand the public is fascinated with her, and on the other there's outright hatred) to launch Gaga. In other words, she only became super interesting to the masses when there was a villainess involved.
