He promised the referendum to please people before the general election and I guess expected to stay in the EU and put a stop to UKIP. Didn't happen!

He promised the UK people a referendum during the election in order to win basically. There is huge speculation that David Cameron will step down as PM due to him being an avid Remain supporter and not wanting to negotiate the brexit, etc. Many conservative MP's today sent a letter to David Cameron to urge him to stay on as the PM due to the division going on in the Conservative Party right now.

Previous PMs were Labour, he's Conservative.

He promised this referendum to his own party members who have long asked for a revote since the EU has drastically changed.

Having lost our confidence and potentially, caused the country to Leave, he probably should resign.

We didn't all ask for this.

I think (not sure), that UKIP was stealing too many right wing votes, and he needed to do it to keep them. UKIP was rising due to the migrant crisis I think. Open borders may be the end of the EU if the other countries follow the UK's lead. But they haven't left yet.
