Def Jam, as a label, repressed all of their artists to a ridiculous extent.
Mariah Carey's Don't Forget About Us & Touch My Body until they were huge on radio. They got to #1 easily, but neither had great longevity.
Ne-Yo's So Sick was repressed for a long time - it was a Top 10 hit before it was even available for sales, & then it got to #1 before falling out of the Top 10 a little more than a month later.
Rihanna had the most songs repressed, but only because she released the most first singles. SOS blasted from 34 to 1 & was already #8 on radio songs. I'm pretty sure Umbrella was repressed (an obvious foolish move), & Take a Bow a well. Even just last year.
----------------
Repression was extremely common back from 2005-2010, & so many people used it to chart higher.

It was still going on until about 2009-2010ish. Now, immediate digital releases are the thing.
I remember waiting WEEKS for a favorite song of mine to be added, & it didn't come until ridiculously late. Listening to a good in crappy quality because there's nothing else available SUCKS.
