If this where true, she would have outsold Utada Hikaru's last album and came close to Koda Kumi's (which is highly unlikely). ALSO, Oricon publishes a year-end chart with sales totals and I've never seen artists on there not from Japan, especially not Avril. I'm almost positive about this.
If you visit the Oricon page in wikipedia, it confirms that Avril has only sold 788,000 copies of her album, which is certainly not 1,000,000.

788,000 and over 200,000 IMPORTED. So, yes, she has sold 1 million.
I'm sorry but you're wrong. I've read about the japanese success of 'Let Go' and 'Under My Skin' more then once.
Avril's manager, Terry Mcbride, has also talked about how Avril is one of the only artists to have a song go #1 on the japanese foreign charts AND domestic (with GF).
I remember I checked Japanese Itunes and Avril was like the only western artist in the top 10, (with GF once again).
She's very big in Japan.
To back up my claim: A quote from Avril's manager on GF chart success in Japan.
"... Lavigne's Japanese-flavoured single Girlfriend debuted at number 1 on Japan's international and domestic charts], something McBride said was previously unheard of for an English-speaking artist.
"Normally you'd only get the international chart, you wouldn't get the domestic chart. She got both.''

Why are people importing the same album? Is one in Japanese and the other one in English?
AGAIN, Oricon only counts certain sales and as of right now, imports do not count, just as digital downloads don't towards such charts as year end charts.
I'm not trying to take away from her success or anything, I'm just saying that if you factored in imports and digital sales to all the artists, 1,000,000 copies is no longer as amazing as it sounds.

Yes they did, but again, they don't count them there on their charts. I wish they did, it would make things look more accurate. We do it here...I don't see why they don't there?

Japan is the only market that if you include bonus tracks or something more, you will sell more copies than in the rest of the world.

They don't count but it's still her actual sales in Japan .

I think we all knew. But we are talking about her actual sales in Japan. We don't care if Oricon count it.
otherwise, i think TBDT will cross 1M by Oricon's count in next 6 months. Because she already sold 788M and she's still selling 10sK every week !

Okie, I get what you mean. But if it's not amazing, why no other foreign aritsts could sale like her in Japan?? Even BoA ?

Ok, like I said, all I'm saying is that if Oricon doesn't state it, then it must not be that amazing of a deed. It's great that she is a foreign artist that can crack the Japanese industry though. BoA is Korean, so she too is a foreign artist and she also has two albums with over 1,000,000 copies sold, so I wouldn't exactly say she isn't as successful as Avril Lavigne.

I know what you're saying Exodus, but as a North American artist, Avril's success in Japan is pretty impressive. The fact that she's managed to chart on the domestic and international charts show that Japan has embraced her in a way that's not usually seen.
Nobody claimed she was bigger then Utada but she has moved 1,000,000 units with all three of her albums and that's a first. Oricon be damned. It just shows Oricon has an unfair system, especially for foreign artists.

LMAO. Have you even seen BoA sales? Either you can't read, or you're just purely ignorant? Besides, I was not the one who compared Avril Lavigne to BoA plus the fact that Avril recorded a Japanese version of "Girlfriend" might I add. - _ -
