Without any knowledge, I'd say it's safe to say you don't need to worry about the smileys changing. They're largely the standard assortment across forums and redesigning them just for atrl would take too much effort and changing to a new set would be too awkward (there'd be no equivalent of gaycat, jonny or most of our smilies.)
I was about to say your only worry would then be no smileys at all, but Athens has posted a few times about considering adding new smileys after the update. Who knows though.
