Lux's passive and ult don't do anything besides damage, and support Lux can't take advantage of her AP ratios. As the game progresses, she's left with three spells that are relevant (the snare on Q, the slow on W and the shield on E) and teams generally require more of their supports than that. Lux isn't like Zyra or Vel'koz, who have threatening damage without their own gold income. Lux is reliant on items.
Sure, Lux support isn't terrible. Fiora support is probably worse. There's just a long list of supports that Lux doesn't have any advantages over. You're welcome to play whatever you want wherever you want, but don't try to bill it as viable.

First let me say I play all of the champions you mentioned except Zyra to a lesser extent. Morgana's Q is a single root. Yes it lasts up to one second longer when maxed but Lux's Q can easily root 2 champions. In a duo lane when getting a gank from your jungler, that's perfect and allows even higher kill potential if you can get your Q off correctly. You have more potential to kill flashes too. If you want to really have an impact with Morgana, you have to ult to stun and that's always riskier + it's pretty easy to move out of her ult range + she can only begin doing this at level 6. Morg's shield is OP but it only covers one champion (usually herself when attempting to initiate).
Karma's trading ability is great in lane, her shield allows the ADC to trade better. Her poke is impactful, like Lux's. I find it easier to get off Lux's E than Karma's Q/mantra'd Q. To root one person, Karma has to basically do what Morgana's ult does and that's get in closer range. Her root lasts less time as Lux's until it's maxed, then it's just the same time as Lux's. I prefer the skill shot. Maybe it's just my play style. I find her somewhat equal to Lux, just comes down to preference. Annie can shred a team on her own with a good combo.
So can Lux though. And without the risk of getting in close range/blowing your flash just so you can stun. Also I do not play Vel'Koz, but I've seen him as a support sometimes. I'm just not really a fan. Maybe I should get into him?
The icing on the cake, of course, is that Lux's ult has an extremely short cooldown. She can poke you out, zone you off objectives and do a lot of damage to your team right before a big team fight breaks out. Much like an Ezreal ult, you want to inflict a ton of damage and chunk out the enemy mid laner/adc before a team fight. She does all this, from a distance,
as the support. And her ult is back up again before you know it.
A good Thresh support probably is more useful than a good Lux support. But I still find her extremely viable in the right hands. Just land your skillshots.
This is all coming from someone who occasionally likes to play Orianna Support, Cassiopeia Support and Viktor Support.

I totally disagree. You absolutely cannot build a support anywhere near as powerfully as a mid laner. One glance over a mid laner's income compared to a support's will tell you as much. On a carry like Lux, who relies on her AP ratios for damage, being deprived of gold is devastating.

It's pretty difficult to carry as Lux. Even if you get a little ahead, Lux is always going to be too squishy from start to finish. Literally any popular mid laner counters Lux. Yasuo, Ekko, Zed, Fizz, Katarina, Kassadin, Talon. Even Cho'Gath, Diana and Ezreal are tough. Unless the person you're against is garbage you're probably going to have a moderately rough time. It's incredibly easy to get dove when you're solo laning. She can't just dash out and away like Ahri or Leblanc can.
Imagine getting dove by the enemy Sejuani + Fizz and all you can do is shield.
Try carrying the game when you're pre-occupied with trying your best to just survive and control your own lane. I find it more difficult to get far ahead in that atmosphere and I can be of more use as a support who packs PLENTY of utility to easily get myself and my ADC through laning phase very successfully but also split functions as that long-range pokey mid laner with powerful burst. Put a champion who can actually hold up well in mid lane and let me support. It's like you're the hidden threat of the game who over time just gets more threatening.
Starting with spellthief's edge helps make up for the gold deficit. And I want to note that when you're playing Lux mid her mana problems are even worse than as a support.
As a support you can play more passive-aggressively and are less likely to run oom. Not to mention going back to base isn't nearly as risky to do when you're playing bot lane.
