I think he's secretly on a major record label, but they're marketing him as a truly independent artist to give him more appeal. I think certain artists are given a initial "taste" of the good life and success without knowing anything. and then they get offered contracts to sell themselves to this cause (working for lucifers ultimate goal). by then they had already tasted the fruit of success and are too weak to refuse it and so accepte it.
thats why I think we see a lot of one hit wonders who then dissapear. they might have refused and not fallen for the trick.
so maybe Macklemore is in the stage where he either chooses to stick with fame and fortune and sign himself over or refuses and becomes irrelenvent. we will all know by his next era. if he is succesfull know its because he sold himself if not its because he has refused and we should applaud him. so let's wait.

The weekend way to the top has been really weird too like all these years and just randomly everything seems so perfect. Its like they set it up/planned it perfectly if you think about it.

He was an underground act and got buzz from the urban crowd after The crew with Drake... get acclaim but little success for years. He was known by lots of people but not in mainstream kinda way like he is now.

Then he collabs with Sia and Ariana, the Ariana collab its a major success and the Sia song gets released too and pop radio starts playing the version with Abel. Then the 5SOG soundtrack and often its a major crossover success..he gets lots of buzz and people check for him/his older stuff. He releases the hills and CFMF and BAM it feels like he's been a major artist for year when in reality it just happened in the past year. Really interesting and I'm glad because I've always liked him since the Crew and Wicked Games and I'm so tired of bruno mars...he annoys me so much
