There is way more to selling your music than the target audience.

Taylor's audience is the same audience that made Hannah Montana, Avril Lavigne, and Britney super successful, and they are all different genres.

Taylor has a much wider appeal than just tween fans. There are many grown-ups that would purchase a Taylor album in a heartbeat. Taylor is just one of those artists who can gain support from various audiences. It's like selling her short when you say that "her audience" is just tween girls who like fairytale endings. Minimal hype? In what alternate universe did neither one of those albums have strong hype, especially Magna Carta? Besides, Jay-Z and Kanye are different because they have locked-in fanbases and don't necessarily need hype to sell. Hip Hop tends to open up with big numbers, but it's not everyone doing it; it's the ones they take seriously or get massive play on urban stations... or in Jay-Z and Kanye's cases, have name recognition. Those albums shortly hit a brick wall after their debut weeks anyway.

I mean minimal in terms of period of announcement to release. Jay had two weeks to do promo, Ye had about a month.

Yes they have name recognition but so does Damita Jean and she barely passed 100k.

I know it's not an apples-to-apples comparison but the point I'm making is that certain genres open with big numbers and certain ones need a bit more of a push?
