Well this is how I see it.
Vocally Mimi has always been sublime.but mostly before 1997(pre-butterfly) Mariah was a straight up balladeer and power belter.She has always been very flexible vocally, ESPECIALLY pre 97,but I don't feel that she had taken off as creatively yet.
She really started becoming more expiremental when she got finally make the music she wanted to.
I honestly feel and know(as a singer) a good bit of her 2000's work is more vocally challenging then her 90s stuff,because her melisma's, vocals dynamics,harmonies and MULTIPLE layers and superhuman breath control became apparent.
Why do y'all think that Mimi, even on a good day has trouble singing some of her songs live??
Because they are IMPOSSIBLE.
