Rainbow to me personally wasn't about the depth, lyrcism or gimmick of the album.

Like MC said she named that album raibow because it showed off different textures and idiosyncrasies of her voice.People try to drag her rainbow vocals, but they were good to me.
Soulful,somewhat raspy,showed of her riffs complicated and runs, defining use of melisma etc.

I would sat vocally it was her most creative in terms of how she approached her songs.

I like her Rainbow vocals as well. Bliss alone>>> Those harmonies! Crybaby and Heartbreaker too. She didn't show off as much on the other songs but it still worked.

I don't think I've actually bothered with the Rainbow Tour at all. I can think of exactly one performance that I remember and enjoyed from that mess.

I love her E=mc^2 vocals, like 4real4real. Some might say they were simplistic(I'd say clean and effective ) but she still let loose a bit, I don't get why everyone drags them. The end of "I Stay In Love", the last half of "Last Kiss", "For The Record", "I Wish You Well", "I'm That Chick" is a pretty clean vocal as well(and has one of her best live vocal performances of the last 5 years).

She didn't sound monotone and Melodyned out like she did on Memoirs.

I don't think I've actually bothered with the Rainbow Tour at all. I can think of exactly one performance that I remember and enjoyed from that mess.

Well this is how I see it.

Vocally Mimi has always been sublime.but mostly before 1997(pre-butterfly) Mariah was a straight up balladeer and power belter.She has always been very flexible vocally, ESPECIALLY pre 97,but I don't feel that she had taken off as creatively yet.

She really started becoming more expiremental when she got finally make the music she wanted to.

I honestly feel and know(as a singer) a good bit of her 2000's work is more vocally challenging then her 90s stuff,because her melisma's, vocals dynamics,harmonies and MULTIPLE layers and superhuman breath control became apparent.

Why do y'all think that Mimi, even on a good day has trouble singing some of her songs live??

Because they are IMPOSSIBLE.

I agree. She was still serving vocals imo, especially on the songs you mentioned, Maybe it's just the vocals meshed so well with the production of E=MC2(I love that album so much). Memoirs was a different story.....

I actually prefer Memoirs over E for some reason.. Hmn

My main problem with E=MC^2 was that her vocals became REALLY thin and scrachy.

Her live performances were DIRE and horrid that era too.It really showed
But alas there are a lot of gems (the ones you named)

I wish you well is another one where her voice sounds tired.but it adds to the soulfulness of the track

I agree with this. It's a shame that Mariah couldn't produce the art she wished to express with the aid of her uninhibited voice. She finally got her freedom after years of torment, and then her voice gave out at the same time Just imagine Mariah truly reaching her greatest potential, maintaining Daydream vocals for years. Though she still managed to make great music anyways.

The album is flawless though.

The Angels Advocate tour was also meh but she had her moments, like the Impossible Reprise adlibs and the Barretos concert.

I LOVE everything from "Betcha" through "Candy Bling". Then it gets basic a bit with Ribbon, Inseperable, and Standing O. It's A Wrap is good. After that, I don't really care for anything other than More Than Just Friends(which I'm really surprised how well it's aged and held up, going from filler to a standout practically ) and The Impossible(Reprise). It's just too 2009 sounding for me otherwise.

I think touring was the main reason her voice fd up for awhile in 08.It took her awhile to recover.

I felt vocally confident in Mimi again during MC2Y era.Dem babies did a wonderful number on mariahs voice.
