I am sure some are copycats and want attention, but I disagree that most mass shootings occur because the media reports them. More than 200 shootings (the number is probably closer to 300 by now) have happened this year and it is impossible to dedicate extensive coverage to all. Most of these people are mentally ill and should not have had access to those firearms.
Plus, it is impossible for the media to ignore what's happening. I agree that getting too much into the details of the life of the shooter can be morbid and unnecessary, though.
