Reeces' Best Of '09: Top 30 Albums (15-14)
15. Robin Thicke “Sex Therapy”
Standout Tracks: 'Meiple', '2 Luv Birds', 'It's In The Morning', 'Rollacoasta', 'It's In The Morning', 'Sex Therapy'
This should come as no surprise, both The Evolution of Robin Thicke and Something Else made very important appearances in my chart in 2007 and 2008 respectively. In this album, Robin takes a different route, and goes a little wild, earning for the first time the parental advisory sticker. The collaboration at an all time high this time, Robin collaborates with Jay-Z in the fun and catchy ‘Meiple’ and with Snoop Dogg in the fresh and explicit ‘It’s In The Morning’. Other collaborations include club banger ‘Shakin’ It 4 Daddy’ featuring Young Money’s newest talent, Nicki Minaj. Kid Cudi adds something different to ‘Elevata’, while other collaborations include the infectious ‘Rollacoasta’ featuring Estelle and the inspiring ‘Diamonds’ with the help of The Game. Robin shines on his own as well, ‘Sex Therapy’, ‘2 Luv Birds’ and ‘Mrs. Sexy’ are right at his ally with that classic R&B sound that he is used to deliver accompanied by his signature falsetto. Robin Thike took a huge risk with this record, but it was worth it, he released the best album of his career so far and one of the best R&B records of the year. Now the question is, how is he gonna top this? I don’t know how, I just wanna her the next album.
14. Alicia Keys “The Element Of Freedom”
Standout Tracks: 'Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart', 'Put It In A Love Song', 'Love Is My Disease', 'Empire State Of Mind Part 2', 'Love Is Blind', 'Distance and Time'
The Element Of Freedom was one of my most anticipated albums of the year, but sadly it didn’t live up to my high expectations when it leaked, the reason could’ve been that I couldn’t stop comparing it to her old material. Fortunately that quickly changed, the more I listened it, the more I appreciated it, and the more I learned to love it as a different album. The unique and completely different for Alicia, ‘Love Is Blind’, is the first track in the album and you are more than likely going to be repeating the chorus in your head after you listen to it. ‘Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart’ is simply amazing, and I’m so glad it got released as a single, I can’t get enough of that song. Her voice sounds flawless and full of emotion in the beautiful masterpiece ‘That’s How Strong My Love Is’ and one of my favorite tracks, ‘Love Is My Disease’. ‘Unthinkable (I’m Ready)’ is genius, while the catchy ‘In This Bed’ and ‘Like The Sea’ add something different to the record. Collaboration with Beyonce ‘Put It In A Love Song’ is just right, it sounds very different from the rest of the album, making it stand out. ‘Distance and Time’ is just lyrically perfect and you add Alicia’s voice to it and you get a work of art. The album couldn’t end in a better way with ‘Empire State Of Mind Part II’, at times you don’t even miss Jay-Z in the track. I'm sure the album would be much higher if it would've been released in the middle of the year, but it doesn't really matter, Alicia delivered an amazing record and I can't be more satisfied.
