If it weren't for the psychic connection stuff, you're right that they should speak their own languages and be subtitled. However, I could easily see handling said subtitles while conveying the idea that the sensates can understand each other in the psychic scenes becoming a major problem. So they did away with other languages altogether, which I think was probably smart.

They are obviously speaking in their own languages in their own scenes with the people from their own countries. We're just seeing it as English to make it easier for us. And honestly, this dissonance between what we know they're speaking and what we hear is nothing new for a person who actually watches sci-fi. Farscape has translator microbes, Star Trek has universal translators, all resulting in the same effect. You're only able to play the "lazy" and "culturally insensitive" card here because this show is Earth-based.

This is a smart show, which hasn't watered anything down or pulled any punches. Had they wanted to make people watch it with subtitles, they would have. I feel like it's more of a matter of it being hard to make subtitles fully work in every kind of scene in the show.

And how does apply to the characters in the show? English is ranked 3rd in number of native speakers because of all the English-speaking territories in the world... none of which the characters are from.

We don't "see" everything the way the characters do either. Amanita can't see the other sense8, we can.. Etc etc.

Secondly when Van Damme is speaking in Swahili, Sun is hearing him speak Korean, but when Sun is speaking Korean, he's hearing it in Swahili. Imagine all 8 of them in a room, all of them hearing the same thing that's being expressed in a particular language, in their own language at the same time. Which language would the characater speaking have to speak? Because he can't be filmed talking in 8 languages at the same time. What language would we the audience get to hear then?

It's not lazy to use English, it's the only way to do it.

Most Americans are turned off by subtitles so I highly doubt it was ever put on the table regardless of how complicated the show is. The first idea for the movie Memoirs of a Geisha was to be in Japanese for it to be realistic, but that was rejected because it just won't work for American audiences other niche ones. Having it in English was much more practical.

I think it fits with the plot too, but I'm just giving the practical reason. It's not going to work regardless. Most American shows and movies do this because the audience isn't receptive to scenes longer than 10 minutes with subtitles.

Hmm, interesting that Lana Wachowski said that they are all pansexual. I really hope that they explore this more next season.

Anyways, I finishes it last night and this is the type of show that you need to watch completely so you can understand and get the better picture. I bought that the dialogue was cringe worthy most of the time and some scenes tended to be longer than they need it to however, it really paid off. I loved the show as a whole and I think that its only going to get better.

Yes, but I feel like people who are too stupid and lazy to deal with subtitles are already going to be too stupid and lazy to comprehend and appreciate this show in the first place even without them.
