This isn't surprising. Cheryl was only 31 during the Only Human era but Radio 1 played her music significantly less than they did during the A Million Lights era (when she was 29). I think Capital are really supporting Madonna with the single though which should make up for R1's lack of support.

Radio is selective. They play what they're "asked" to, and what will keep listeners tuned in.
Radio 1 caters to younger listeners, and in addition to playing what's hot...they have a personal agenda of pushing trendy up-and-comers so as to appear "cool".
Whether it's fair or correct or not, they don't want to risk alienating their audience.
And in their minds, they obviously don't think it's unfair because they have different BBC stations to cater for different kinds of artists and audiences. Radio 2 being more AC and its demographic being more likely to appreciate Madonna being played.

But they have no solid prove their audience doesn't want Madonna, Robbie, Kylie or whatever artist they boycott. They assume that their audience doesn't want to hear those artists, but there is no solid prove their audience would or wouldn't listen to certain artists because of their age.

I can tell you now, teenagers do not want to hear Madonna, and they would have internal feedback which supports this.

this. people need to stop pretending this is Radio 1's fault. They are a trend-setting station by intent and are under no obligation to stay playing acts that were popular with teenagers 30 years ago. This is 2015.
