This. I think if anything its underrated. People don't understand how much skill and thought goes into writing a song, creating the melody, telling a story, choosing the right words, not being so cliche, etc.

It's not easy..which is why most artists HAVE to collab with so many other songwriters and producers. It's a joint effort to make something sound good, and when it's finally released people criticize your work that you worked so hard on.

It can discourage some people from writing again.

If artists writing their songs causes you extreme stress as if it were a catastrophic event, you probably need serious help.

Anyway.. (though it is funny to point out the ironic title considering this is about writing ability) .. songwriting is an added quality to an artist, and it should never be required. Actors/Actresses don't direct their own movies. There's a role for everyone. A singer's main role is to sing, and thinking about the range of today's popstars, some can't even manage that.

Actors aren't expected to write their own scripts. If they do, then they're not just mere actors. They're would be credited as a writer too.

It's not wrong to not write your songs. Songwriting is a talent equal to singing and dancing. Singers who don't write are just singers, with the avenue of expressing their artistry through the voice. Songwriters express through their lyrics.

There is no double standards. The reason why many criticise some current artists for not being able to write is either because they tout themselves as a writer or they lack the ability to sing or dance, making them basically a puppet, not an artist at all. No one criticise Whitney for not writing her songs.

well not necessarily. to be a musical artist you need to understand your body of work & be able to explain it & make it something great. You don't technically have to write it.

I have much more respect for artists who write their own music. And there aren't many artists on the industry right now who does that.

I find singers who sing other people's songs kinda tacky and uninteresting. Especially heartbreak or rap songs
